Ladies and gentlemen of the local media, I hope you're already actively trying to acquire Shep (or at least the rights to his mustache).

Down The Shore: Liquor Stores The Size Of An Elephant

PWD Down The Shore
Circle Liquors

Philadelphia Will Do continues its half-assed look at the shore -- which is appropriate, actually -- today with, probably, the greatest location in all of Jersey: Circle Liquors.

Circle Liquors sits just outside Ocean City, N.J., and while I mentioned it briefly in the paper today, I'd like to expand on its greatness.

Ocean City is dry, so there are a bunch of places to buy alcohol just over the bay in Somers Point. But the behemoth of them is Circle Liquors, which looks like a Wal-Mart and is roughtly the size of Lincoln Financial FIeld. But they'll deliver to Ocean City, too, so you don't even have to move.

What makes Jersey liquor stores great is that you can buy everything in one place. They sell beer, hard liquor, wine, etc. Everclear is legal, so you can get blind, too.-- though, to be fair, it's not like anyone wants to actually drink that. And the drinking age is 18!

Okay, maybe I made that last part up. (Or maybe it just seems like it.)

Down The Shore: Atlantic City's Casinos To Get Taller

PWD Down The Shore

Did you ever wonder why Atlantic City casinos aren't all that tall? You look at them and go, "Wow, those are ugly. I'm surprised they're not uglier and taller."

Or maybe that's just me. Anyway, the casinos aren't quite as tall as they could be because of Bader Field, an airport right in Atlantic City. (This is different from the Atlantic City International Airport.) Apparently, these bureaucrats think that planes need "room" to "land."

Well, the casinos got their way recently, as Atlantic City formally filed papers to close to airport -- which, according to the OED, was the first one in the world called an "air port" (neat!).

You can see the casinos salivating -- literally, the actual casinos -- and getting ready to become even taller, glitzier versions of their previous selves any day now.

On the plus side, hey, does that mean more places to gamble?

Down The Shore: Sam's Pizza Lives

PWD Down The Shore

Last year, Sam's Pizza on the Wildwood boardwalk burnt down in a fire that started in a motel behind it.

Those of us who grew up going to Wildwood every summer figured that Sam's would join Dracula's Castle as an old Wildwood landmark that had burnt down and never returned. (In 2002, some teenagers managed to burn down Castle Dracula during Wildwood's off-season. Bastards.)

Oh, ho ho, not so fast, said the Sam's Pizza owners, who have rebuilt the restaurant to twice its size and are still producing the best pizza on the Boardwalk, if not the world. The place is still packed and, now that Wildwood has its best pizza -- right across from Curly's Fries -- all is right with the world again.

Amen.

Down The Shore: Wildwood Finally Hits 1995

PWD Down The Shore

Headline in last week's Press of Atlantic City shore guide:

Don't laugh; this actually makes sense. Wildwood just stopped playing "Rhythm is a Dancer" last summer. Getting to Live was a logical next step.

Down The Shore: A Whale Of A Time!

PWD Down The Shore
073106whale.jpg
Late last week, a group of beachgoers were sitting around, minding their own business in Sea Isle City, when they spotted a pair of whales on the beach. So the beachgoers decided to form a chain and push, push, push the whales back into the ocean.

This is quite a feat. When I'm on the beach, I don't want to get up for anything that doesn't involve me immediately getting back on the towel and going to sleep. But apparently people in Sea Isle are good people, and so a group of about 20 of them rolled two whales (a baby, which was easy, and a mother, which took extra support) back into the ocean.

There's been no sight of the whales since we humans pushed our fellow mammal back into the ocean, but Mitch Myers, who helped rescue the whale, knows what he'll remember:

"That's the biggest mammal I've ever touched,” said Myers.

Just in case you thought he had touched a larger whale.

Down The Shore: You, Too, Can Be A Hooters Girl

PWD Down The Shore
073106acweekly.jpg
Let's start with the easy one: The current cover story in Atlantic City Weekly.

It's a story about the Miss Deckadence contest, held weekly at The Deck at Trump Marina. It used to be called the Miss Hawaiian Tropic pageant, but it wasn't drawing enough people. So Trump Marina got Hooters involved and -- naturally -- we have a huge success, ladies and gentlemen.

The girls at the Miss Deckadence contest takes place every Friday, and the top three girls each week advance to the finals on Labor Day weekend, where they'll compete for the grand prize. But that's not all! Each and every week, the girls competing can win the job of a lifetime:

Usually about two or three of the 12-15 average are non-Hooters employees, according to Hooters promotions manager Kathy Walls, and some are occasionally asked to join the company's workforce if they possess the right apparatus.

“If a contestant who is not a Hooters girl is competing and meets all the right criteria, we might ask her to fill out an application,” says Walls. “We make our own schedules at Hooters, so if there's a girl who might want to join us and pick up a few extra hours and some extra money, this could be a good opportunity for her. It's an excellent company with a lot of room for advancement."

The dream is still alive. Enter a contest and, presto, you're a Hooters girl.

Philadelphia Will Do Goes Down The Shore!

pwd-shore.jpg

With the heat approaching triple digits all week, there's only one cure. That's right: We're going down the shore. Well, not literally, but this week is Philadelphia Will Do's Down The Shore!

All week, in addition to our usual diet of puppies and Daily News columnists, we'll be regurgitating all we know about the shore all week! We'll be pretty much staying south of Atlantic City and doing our usual game -- i.e. news items, puppies on the beach, etc. -- although we'll do some general rambling about our favorite (and least favorite) things at the shore, too.

And, yes, if you're wondering, we're going to be making fun of the media at the shore resorts, too. You thought we wouldn't?

Stay tuned all week -- and you can pretend you're down there.
