Jaws On The DL
Cross-promotion alert! This week's
PW On The DL Podcast by Dan Levy
features none other than Ron Jaworski, talking about his football career, breaking down game tape and (of course) the Philadelphia Soul, who have a playoff game Saturday.
(Incidentally, this is my favorite line: "We also talk about the philanthropic efforts of the team and how they are one of the most successful teams in the league, yet don’t make any money." Fortunately, the team is owned by a rock star, so I think he's doing okay in the pocket.

Down The Shore With Alli & Erica
Geeze, nobody did a parody of one those Philly.com beach girls so Philadelphia Weekly had to do it ourselves. Watch serious journalists Alli and Erica explore the beaches of Ocean City. Fantastic job, girls.

Me, On The Internet
Hey, here's me on the On the DL podcast, the 2008 new media cross-promotion spectacular. If you have the stomach for it, you can listen to me ramble on about blogging and drugs -- and then say something stupid every couple of minutes! Woo-hoo.

Today on DrugRoar.com
Yes, I'm still blogging daily about drugs over at Drug Roar. Today I even did a few whole posts! One was about New Jersey's medical marijuana bill and another was a Redlasso (fight the man!) clip of a surprisingly long (and well done, to boot) report about low dose naltrexone and its possibility in treating a variety of diseases, including Chron's and Parkinson's.

This Week's Drug Roar
As you can guess, it takes a lot of drugs to get through one episode of Gossip Girl. (Not really.) And, yes, I'm still doing the drug column: This week it's about the side-effects of drug prohibition. The column wanders a bit too much -- digesting the info I come across into streamlined columns is hard sometimes -- but I think I make some okay points. I guess.

Recently In Me
This week's Drug Roar column is up. It's about how the media covers drugs, using the example of marijuana. I guess. As usual, I'm blogging at drugroar.com.
Also, I wrote this little column about Buzz Bissinger and blogs and truth and baseball in last week's paper. And, for some reason, reviewed The Price is Right.

Other 'PW' Blogger One-Ups Me
It appears both current
Philadelphia Weekly bloggers were in the news over the weekend as
Liz Spikol was written up in
the New York Times over the weekend.
Geeze, you'd think it's 2006 with all these stories on bloggers. What's next, another racehorse who breaks his leg in the Triple Crown? Er.
And, yes, if you haven't seen it, here's my clip on the Friday 10 o'clock news.

'PW' Editors Elsewhere
Oh, forgot to link this the other day: PW A&E editor Tara Murtha has a post on Comedy Central's InDecision 2008 blog about her fantasy of a hetero-lesbian crush on Hillary Clinton. Which is odd, because I also have a hetero-lesbian crush on her. Er, wait.

Today on DrugRoar.com
I wrote late last night about the scare over "skunk cannabis" in England, which is leading the government to increase the penalties for possession and sale of the drug. Prime Minister Gordon Brown said that marijuana use can be lethal, too, which is a level of lie even our politicians won't touch. (Not that the Inquirer won't.)

This Week's Drug Roar
It's about marijuana decriminalization, the "duh" of drug policy reform. (I forgot to post this Tuesday, mainly because I was sick.) As usual, I'm blogging at drugroar.com nearly every day.

Today On DrugRoar.com
Yes, I'm blogging here every day, for the most part. Today, I write about the big drug bust today and the staunch rhetoric of public officials -- ahem, Mr. Mayor -- who should know better.

'PW' Chatted With The Losers!
PW's Alli Katz was apparently not as tired of the election as I was and lugged a video camera all across the city yesterday, including the Famous 4th Street Deli. There, she
interviewed Anne Dicker and Johnny Doc, who both lost to Larry Farnese in the First District Senate Race. What a sad video!
She also got video of Obama at Pat's (of course) and a near-riot of Obama and Clinton supporters outside City Hall, putting my work ethic to shame.

PW On The Election
Here's a PW video from West Philly asking people about whatever is going on today. (An election of some sort?) And Steven Wells listens to right-wing talk radio all day, including the show of Bill Bennett, who still has a job somehow.
There will be more on the PW front page all night.

Drug Roar
Look, this column is super-topical: Both Obama and Clinton aren't progressive when it comes to drug law reform. Actually, they're pretty much the same as Ronald Reagan. Ooh, goody!

Ha Ha, Kids Who Can't Vote For Obama
Everyone knows Barack Obama is popular with the kiddies. "He's their KFC JFK!" the adults say, and they are probably right. But some of these people are so young they will not even be able to vote for President Obama for re-election in 2012, except in their mock elections -- and by then they will want to vote for Ron Paul anyway. (For mayor, they'll be voting for Larry West.)
PW reporter extraordinaire Alli Katz interviews some kids who support Barack Obama but won't be able to vote for him next week. Ha ha, stupid kids! What can Obama do for them -- they don't even drive! (As the commercials tell us, Obama will stand up to the oil companies with his giant gun of hope.)
Hillary Clinton immediately called for the punishment of these children by taking away their violent video games.

Liveblogging The Debate Tonight
PW endorses Obama today in the paper in our political issue today; indeed, everybody is thinking about politics all over Philadelphia!
Why, tonight is the only debate before the Pennsylvania primary, and I will be liveblogging it along with PW's Alli Katz. To celebrate my new drug column, I will also be doing several lines of hope and shots of change beforehand, and drinking bitter beer.

Drug Roar
This week's Drug Roar column is up. It's about low-arrest drug crackdowns. And we have a fun new logo on the front page, thanks to Alex Fine. And, yes, sadly, this is serious stuff again; it pains me to be so unfunny! Intentionally, I mean.
I'm also blogging at drugroar.com.

I Write Something Serious For Once
After 2 1/2 years (or so) of making stupid jokes for this website and for
PW, the paper's finally letting me write something serious! Okay, so I've done that in the past, but whatever, I couldn't think of a better intro to let youse know about my new weekly column about drugs.
The first one's about the recent "historic" cocaine bust in Philadelphia. Here's an excerpt:
And if there is a short–term paucity of cocaine on the streets, it’s not just users who are harmed. The head of Atlanta’s High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force credits stronger policing against drugs for the city’s 2007 uptick in robberies, burglaries and auto thefts.
More murders, Jack Killorin told the Atlanta Journal Constitution March 9, could be on the way: ”If the market here gets unstable down to the street, then the streets will get bloody.”
Whoo! More murders! I can't wait 'til those hit Philadelphia. The column is called Drug Roar, and I'm also going to be blogging at drugroar.com starting later this week. I'm not sure how many of you will be interested, but if I can't shamelessly promote myself here, where can I?

College-Aged Kids #1 Issue: Income Tax
Praise Zeus! Ron Paul has
spoken in the state of Pennsylvania -- at the University of Pittsburgh -- and he got a packed house to cheer him on.
Alli Katz (Friend of D-Mac™, and also a co-worker) notes on Independence Brawl that the biggest cheer Ron Paul got all night was not for his talk of ending the drug war, but for his talk of ending the income tax.
"I didn't realize that people your age knew so much about money and inflation," Paul said. "But it gets the largest applause at college campuses. I figured the first time it happened it was an accident - it was at the University of Southern California. But then at the University of Michigan, they started to burn Federal Reserve notes."
Damn self-hatin' druggie college kids!
Still, it's good to see Ron Paul is in the Keystone State and is somehow still running for president despite McCain clinching the nomination. That kind of panache is going to get my write-in vote come November.

Food Network Big On Cheese Sauce
Yes, that was
PW contributing editor Kirsten Henri on the Food Network Sunday night. She not only appeared on
Throwdown with Bobby Flay, but she appeared on the show judging Philadelphia pretzels: Bobby Flay vs. the Best of Philly™ winner!
She wrote about her experiences for Foobooz. Apparently, the folks at the Food Network are really, really big on cheese sauce on pretzels. (This would confuse the hell out of the New York Times.)
The producer wanted us to say what we thought made a great Philly soft pretzel. They asked us to mention something about ‘cheese sauce.’ I protested. A true Philadelphian would NEVER EVER sully a pretzel with cheese sauce. We clothe our pretzels in mustard and mustard only. You want to argue about what type of mustard, fine, but not cheese. Never cheese. I’m a purist.
He insisted, I frowned. My reputation was on the line here! We compromised on ‘dipping sauce,’ which also offended me, but I didn’t want to be a pretzel prima donna. At least not at this early stage in my career.
It's nice to see Henri didn't back down under the TV pressure. Flay managed to win the contest, actually, proving he does something right (besides his taste in Law & Order ADAs, of course).

Benson Offspring To Overrun Philly
Hmm!
PW's Kate Kilpatrick this week
profiled none other than Anna Benson, wife of the new, currently injured Phillies pitcher. Benson says she "manipulated the media" in New York, and not just by being a knockout former stripper who
sent funny emails to Adam Rubin and said other funny things.
Well, no, okay, I guess that's what she did.
Anyway, Benson also says she's going to do about 400 million different things -- none of which are modeling -- but then says she'll pry just have a 50 kids and send them to the Prep:
“We want more babies. If he signs to Philadelphia, I’ll be pregnant in the next month I’m sure,” she says, explaining that the couple is delaying pregnancy until they figure out where they’re settling down. “It’s a long time [seven years] since I’ve been pregnant. We want at least two more. I’m willing to have as many as he’ll give me.”
Hooray! That would give the gossip columnists material for years.

Fresh Princes Of Protesting
Eventually, all the people (like me, only less lazy) who had been online nonstop since the early-to-mid 1990s were going to realize they could easily use it to prank people in the real world. They did, and it was good, but eventually they realized they could use it to organize for things they cared about in the real world. And, lo and behold, we had the second real world protest of Scientology over the weekend all over the world, including right here in Philadelphia.
Intrepid reporter Alli Katz captured these Anonymous people rapping against Scientology's tax breaks. Excellent all around.
Update: There's now a full video and story up on PW's website.
Update 2: OMG is Will Smith a Scientologist?!

Today On PW
Hey, look, that dog is for change and hope! When
Bill Clinton stopped by the Democratic City Committee today, there were naturally annoying supporters of each candidate out front.
Philadelphia Weekly went and shot them! Unfortunately, PW's Alli Katz used a camera to do this.
Earlier, PW also asked what you were doing this weekend. I, for one, am only pretending to care what you're doing.

Today On PW
PW own Alli Katz braved freezing temperatures -- I wouldn't know how cold, I was inside somewhere -- to stand outside the Academy of Music last night and
interview fine comedy fans like the couple at left and ask 'em if they liked Chris Rock. And, hey, they did! I can only assume these people will all be holding candles outside Wawa tonight as well.
Was it good for you? [PW]
