Your Phillyblog Moment Of The Day
Oh, let's just pick a post
obviously entirely not at random at all:
On a side note, what is it with Africans and shoes? "We got shoes! We got shoes!" Is this a manifestation on the genetic historical code of being shoeless for thousands of years? Nonetheless, maybe next decade fatherhood will be the trend, but for now, itz da feetz.
Yes, and maybe next decade the majority of Phillyblog posters won't make jokes that are, scientifically, the complete antithesis of humor. I won't get my hopes up, though.

Cancer Merchants
Apropos of nothing, I found this icon/thread title combination on Phillyblog pretty hilarious. The thread's pretty awesome, too, especially when the "I hope you get cancer!" accusations start flying.
Oh, yeah, and apparently somebody posting in the thread is related to Bud Dwyer, bahahaha. I don't think it can get any better than this.

Hey Another Phillyblog Dissent Site
Phillyblog poster "TheAlderian" has started yet another Phillyblog dissent site! And it has a Great Grand Plan: "The site is for information, learning, and fun and not to enslave posters into working for free to make other people free money." Woo-hoo, finally, a messageboard without slavery.

Mark B. Cohen's Research Methods Leave Much To Be Desired
As you may know from reading this site, Pennsylvania State Rep.
Mark B. Cohen just
loves the Internet messageboard
Phillyblog. He
adores it. He thinks it's the bee's knees. He thinks it will replace the
Inquirer and
Daily News as the news source for all Philadelphians. If Phillyblog were a sandwich, he'd eat it. If Phillyblog were a woman, he'd have sex with her. If Phillyblog were a blog, he'd post blog entries on there, I guess.
Last week, I noted Cohen's attempt to become the Bill James of Phillyblog when he listed the Phillyblog members who had 1,000 posts or more. As the thread progressed, a few members posted about their omission. They had 1,000 posts, too, why weren't they on the list of the Golden Few?
Turns out, Cohen didn't know about the feature of sorting members by posts, which would have made his quest rather simple, of course. Instead, he apparently compiled the top Phillyblog posters all by hand before being notified about the automated way to do it. Later, he promised to do more research into Phillyblog members not from Philadelphia.
It's difficult to say how unique Phillyaggie is. Chief Salsa, banned from this board for rules violations, accumulated over 3700 postsl many or all of them (I don't know all the facts) were done while he was in Utah. Then there are two members of this list--I forget their names--from Richmond, Viriginia; one identifies himself as an ex-Philadelphian, and the other does not. Then there is a member of this list from St. Louis.
I'll try to do more research on this question; anyone else is welcome to answer Phillyaggie's question as well. He certainly will be a great addition to Philadelphia when he arrives here.
It is only a matter of time before Mark B. Cohen begins the Society for American Phillyblog Research, or SAPR. One day, his revolutionary messageboard counting statistics will be used o'er the land, coining the new term "sapermetrics." Or perhaps: Cohenomics.

Mark B. Cohen Is The Bill James Of Phillyblog
Mark B. Cohen is
really interested in Phillyblog stats. Apparently Eldondre is the Babe Ruth of Phillyblog, setting a record that will not be broken for years and years.
Eldondre made his made his 20,000 post yesterday, hitting at least 20,013. He is certainly setting a pace in this area that will be very hard for anyone of the 16,062 people who have joined us so far, or anyone who joins subsequently, to ever match.
Eldondre's achievement inspired me to look at the other top-posting phillybloggers. I found a total of 81 who had 999 or more posts, and I know I did not have enough time or enough determination to pester those with access to create a printout of the database to cover everybody. I therefore would welcome any additions there might be to this list.

Okay, I Quit
Hey, what's up on Phillyblog! Ooh, a new thread by State Rep. Mark B. Cohen! Let's take a l--
This is apparently done in response to this thread about what three Philadelphians past or present you would invite to dinner, the difference being that, if you wanted to get dinner with Phillyblog posters, you could just ask them if they wanted to go to dinner and hope they say yes.

Tree Thief On Loose In Mayfair
From
Phillyblog:
I just moved to Mayfair to get away from this crap!
My mother gave me a tree to plant in the front lawn last week, because the previous owners of the house I just moved into took their tree with them. [WTF??—dmac]
I came home from work the other day to discover that my tree was stolen! It's not as if it was sitting there in a pot, it was actually planted and mulched in the front lawn. There's a gaping hole in my lawn now where the tree used to be.
I thought this kind of thing didn't happen in Mayfair. (?)
Is this a common occurence in the area?
Ooh, this is a new one. Instead of your neighbors poisoning your trees to get rid of them, they simply steal them right out from under your nose.

You Can't Hope To Silence Phillybloggers, You Can Only Hope To Contain Them
Well well well! Just
a few weeks after Inga Saffron reported on 1352 Lofts' annexation of the sidewalk on South Street1, good ol' Rimas Properties is at it again.
This time, someone from Rimas Properties -- or some sort of weird person posing as a lawyer for Rimas Properties, which would be awesome -- called up Phillyblog and started saying words like "libel" and "slander," according to one of the co-founders. (If somebody said "slander," that's kind of odd, since as far as I know nobody was posting audio files to Phillyblog to bash Rimas.) The posts were taken down.
Naturally, the good users of Phillyblog have exploded in a way that only people on the Internet can, with famed poster EastChestnut asking for a wheelchair so he can pretend to be paraplegic and protest and people getting angry at Phillyblog for not wanting to deal with lawyers angry 'cuz people called Rimas Properties a cunt or whatever. Oh, and they're writing letters and trying to organize a protest; as you can see from the photo, the sidewalk isn't even big enough for Philadelphians over 250 pounds, i.e. most Philadelphians.
In non-Phillyblog advocacy, the Design Advocacy Group is also angry, even though they are probably slim and fit, with all that advocacy and all.
Update: But, damn, is this place nice-looking! Not only that, but you'd get to look out your window and laugh at people trying to squeeze by on the sidewalk, too. Also nice: The Big Green Building, which is apparently powered by its own awesomeness.
1 Oh, also apparently I bashed 'em too in PW. And then it was corrected in a letter. I don't remember any of this, being in an antidepressant- and codeine-induced haze for the past five years.
Where did the "sidewalk grab" thread go? More censorship? [Phillyblog]

Nutter Already Facing Tough Questions From Citizens
Okay, Michael Nutter was responsibly called by the
Inquirer and the AP and your mom and everyone else. This might be good for the city; but who knows, he
just won. But, right now, what I can say is this: It's good because I can run that graphic at right again.
When Nutter finishes partying tonight at Denim or wherever, he will have to face a tough electorate. Namely, he'll have to face the users of Phillyblog, the city's finest location for discourse.
Perhaps Nutter too can open a PB account and come on here at least sometime and post?! I know at least one city councilman who has done it (Kenney).
Yeah. The mayor will post in Phillyblog with the Shock G/Nutter mashup as his avatar.
Default Ok, Nutter wins it. He better not... [Phillyblog]

Vote For Mike Nutter And You Hate Black People!
As you've no doubt heard by now from angry blog commenters (or whatever), Chaka Fattah
brought race into the election last night by saying Michael Nutter "had to remind himself that he's an African American."
Yes, Chaka Fattah is attempting to pull old Milton Street talking points out of his bag of tricks in order to win the election. Good move, Mr. Fattah, but as much media attention as Uncle Milty got, I don't know if saying Nutter has to remind himself he's black is as catchy as "Watermelon Man."
But whatever. Clearly, the big race-related story of the day is a thread started by one Dr. Chuck Williams alleging Nutter supporters are racist. I'm not quite sure how this works -- White people who support Nutter because they think he's not black? Black people who support Nutter because he's not white? Asian people voting for Nutter because he's not Asian? -- but Dr. Williams does!
What are you lead counsel for phillyblogging Nutter-crats??? How can you claim to know what they were or were not inferring?
If you want to speak about truth, let's speak about the number of white liberals who feel that Nutter is the....
'RIGHT KIND OF NEGRO'
This kind of latent racism is as old as jim crow and segregation.
You know, there's a lot of not-so-thinly veiled racism on Phillyblog, but not much, if any, of it supporting Nutter because he's the "right" kind of black man. Then again, Dr. Williams also says his free speech rights have been violated on the private messageboard he posts at because they merged all his anti-Michael Nutter threads into one. He's threatened to sue!
I don't know if white people are supporting Mike Nutter because they're racist, but I do know this: I never, ever, ever want Dr. Williams operating on me. Especially if his doctorate is in political science or something, but either way.

Phila. State Rep Has Not Murdered Anyone
I've poked fun at one
Mark B. Cohen quite a few times here on this lil' ol' blog, but I like to think I have my limits.
For example, that treasure trove, Phillyblog, user TheAlderian -- you can recognize him by his Will Ferrell avatar! -- has, I think, gone past my limits.
In a thread Rep. Cohen started asking people if they had any friends of other races -- of course! -- the city's murder rate came up and...
Again shame on you for being in denial, as a public leader you are directly culpable for the mass murder in this town and its ugliness. People are being murdered because of your lack of will and honesty.
Okay, for once, a defense of State Rep. Mark B. Cohen: I don't think he's a mass murderer. In fact, no, I am sure of it! Mark B. Cohen is not a murderer. Nor did he pull the trigger on 128 murders and, as such, is not "directly culpable."

Mark B. Cohen Receives Greatest Known Honor
Messageboards usually give posters a title text and an avatar. Sometimes these are custom, sometimes they're random and sometimes they're due to the number of posts a person has.
Phillyblog has a Philly-specific set of titles, and today one State Representative was lucky enough to hit the 500-post count today:
Tonight, I have achieved water ice vendor status.
My initial reaction is that having left tastykake maker status, I hope it will be easier to lose weight. All those tastykakes around are mighty tempting. And having easier access to water ice is very helpful in the coming hot spring and summer months.
My more serious reaction is to thank the many posters on phillyblog, the moderators, and the founders for creating a wonderful medium for both discussion and information. I continue to believe that phillyblog, which now has about 13,600 members, will some day soon be the number two print medium in Philadelphia, second only to the Inquirer.
Yeah, those 13,600 members really have the Daily News worried, I'm sure.

Parental Guidance From 1997 Sci-Fi Movie
From Phillyblog comes the end of the debate about how to make Philadelphia schools better. The solution:
Parents should spank their kids! From a user we'll call RuggerAl, since that is his username:
My parents hit me when I messed up bad, the total number of times could be counted on two hands or less. And as a direct result, the thought went through my head before I did something questionable... "Am I going to get a whopping for this?" My sister, much wiser and four years younger, learned many a lesson through me. To quote my dad quoting my grandmother "A soft head makes a soft behind."
Okay, fair enough. But, I mean, do you have any reasoning for it besides of the fact you were hit? Oh, you do? Carry on, then.

Leftovers: Where My Dog At?
• A campaign mailer in the 143rd district in Pennsylvania accuses
Democrat Larry Glick of stealing dogs. Glick says he was sued by a woman who said he stole a dog, like, 29 years ago, and that he never did such a thing, etc., etc. Right: This is just an excuse to post a puppy photo. But you probably knew that already. [Inquirer]
• Phillyblog joins the fray in the Amy Guttman Halloween costume debate: "This man made a consious decision to dress like this because he knows he'd get away with it... if I did it (blue collar white male) I'd be in jail right now.... If this guy wanted to dress up as a controversial figure, he could have just as easily rented a Babe Ruth costume. Babe never hurt anyone other than himself. This tool knew exactly what he was doing." Damn, imagine the headlines a Babe Ruth costume would have made! [Phillyblog]
• Oxford Valley Elementary School was shut down yesterday after a threatening letter was sent saying that "Dick Lewis" would make the school "look like Amish country." What? He wanted to return Bucks County to the sprawling farms of old, nothin' wrong with that. [Bucks County Courier Times]
• A 14-year-old girl was arrested for allegedly writing the "hit list" found in Eastern Regional High School in New Jersey. Police broke the case when they realized the 15 prettiest girls in the school were on the list, and the accused was No. 16. [Inquirer]

Worst. Idea. Ever.
Our
state's most well-read legislator, Rep. Mark B. Cohen, in a post on Phillyblog titled, "
Phillyblog Day? Why Not?":
Today, I have learned recently, is World Blog Day. In a previous thread started by Surfdog, I have have previously all phillybloggers a happy world blog day, full of wisdom, health and happiness.
Phillyblog will soon get its 10,000th member. As I write this, phillyblog has 9,356 members--up from a little more than 700 when I first joined in October, 2003. A minute ago, there were almost eight times as many guests looking at our conversations than there were members. That could mean--we need more information to be certain--that our community is now in excess of 75,000 people counting members and guests.
I have great confidence that soon--say by December 31, 2010--there will be more members of phillyblog than there will be paid subscribers to the Philadelphia Daily News. The last Daily News paid circulation figure is 116,500. That circulation figure will almost certainly continue its slow decline, while our membership will almost certainly continue its regular geometric increases.
So I think we need a phillyblog day. The Pennsylvania House of Representatives and its members are--among other things, of course--in the habit of proclaiming days, weeks, and months for worthwhile Pennsylvania organizations interested in such promotional help. The organizations virtually always choose the date themselves; the Pennsylvania legislature can name any specific date as any number of official days. The same is true with weeks and months, of course.
So when should phillyblog day be? Why should it be that day? And what should we do to celebrate when that day comes?
Ahh, yes, Phillyblog day, when the citizens of Philadelphia will celebrate by talking about where to find the cutest girls in the Northeast, by complaining about a headshop in G-Ho and by blowing up the Gallery.
Actually, that last part doesn't sound so bad.

Leftovers: Two-Bit Bong Merchants, Unite!
• Thanks to Brad Maule for wading through Phillyblog so I don't have to and finding
this gem about a new smoke shop on South Street. To recap: Smoke shop owner introduces himself, anti-drug advocates go nuts, smoke shop owner goes nuts, somebody posts an article saying this guy and NJ Weedman lit up in front of Liberty Bell, smoke shop owner says, "I must ask the people opposed to my store in any sense, are you against the War in Iraq?" • A City Paper correction today says that an article on Aug. 3 "contained several inaccuracies. Morjorie Newlin was 71 when she started lifting weights; the trainer who entered her in her first bodybuilding competition was Robert Rivers, the founder of Rivers Gym; Newlin trains four days a week at Bally and did not appear in commercials in Barbados, but rather a television talk show. City Paper regrets the errors." [CP]
• When he's not wondering what to tell his son why cartoon characters kiss, J.D. Mullane of the Bucks County Courier Times fights back at a journal that gave him a scathing mention in an editorial. His retort: "Do you know what would happen to this country if we gave up eating beef ? We’d be overrun by cows. They’d be blocking the streets." Uh, indeed. [BCCT]
