Obama Goes After Olivia Nutter

We all remember when Mayor Michael Nutter endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton (well before actually being sworn in for mayor, if memory serves). Did he do it because Obama endorsed Chaka Fattah for mayor? Lesser blogs speculated that to be the reason but really, who cares? Nutter is all prObama now.

But Obama isn't done with the Mayor of Philadelphia: he's going after Olivia. Clout has a short blurb about how an Obama supporter handed Nutter a pin and asked him to give it to his daughter. The button said, "If I was 18, I'd vote for Obama-Biden."

Just like in the campaign, though, poor Christian was forgotten. Unlike Olivia, he can legally vote. He's just not as adorable.

Ben Franklin, Mayor Put Heads Together

072208phillyhomeless.jpg

Hip, hip, hooray! The power brokers in this town (Mayor Nutter, Ben Franklin) are finally doing something about the homeless problem. Yes, it's "OMG THERE ARE HOMELESS PEOPLE IN RITTENHOUSE" day on Philly.com. I'm not writing about it yet because I'm willing to wait to see where they go next. It should be amazing.

Mayor Nutter Takes On Gaper Delays

071508krysiuknutter.jpg

So, uh, the mayor helped Dorothy Krysiuk do traffic this morning on Good Day Philadelphia. Apparently the economy is so bad, Mayor Nutter needed to pick up a part-time job, just like how Ed Rendell does Eagles Post Game Live.

Redlasso clip after the jump. (P.S. Somebody get the mayor to dance with mascots next time.)

Finally, A Holiday We Can Really Celebrate

070708bindependenceday.png

The 4th of July? Eh. Today we get a holiday we can really be proud of, thanks to Mayor Nutter.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter will issue a “BINdependence Day” Proclamation to approximately 200 city youth, junior block captains, community members and dignitaries. The City of Philadelphia has declared July 7, 2008 “BINdependence Day” to mark the completion of the expansion of single stream recycling for the City of Philadelphia. Residents all across the city will now be able to put all recyclables into one bin - any bin.

Yes, happy BINdependence Day, Philadelphians! Nutter's release says he'll be at Dilworth Plaza at 2 p.m. Truly this is a holiday where we should be shooting off fireworks like the world has never seen. I wonder if BINdependence Day is always going to be July 7 or if it's always the Monday after the 4th. More importantly, I wonder if we'll get off for it next year.

Nutter At 'Sex' Premiere, And More

052608nutter-drinking.jpg
Oh, how could I forget: Michael Nutter will attend the Philadelphia premiere of Sex and the City. The people at Terry Hines & Associates apparently offered the mayor a free ticket to tonight's invite-only screening of the movie, and the mayor accepted.

To note: This item about the mayor attending the screening of Sex and the City led off Mike Klein's Sunday column. Come on, you can make something up about one of the celebrities in town shooting a movie, nobody will care. Better yet, create a celebrity -- or pick someone from the Internet.

And, here's more: Catherine Lucey's favorite SatC character is Miranda (I'd guess). Sweeney writes about the marketing tie-ins locally, but more importantly decries tired vibrator jokes. Thank you!

Okay, that's enough, no more mentions of this movie.

Phillies Score 10 Safeties!

052608nutter.jpg

Phillyskyline's Brad Maule sends along the above photo of Mayor Nutter celebrating Chase Utley's three-run homer last night in the first inning. The Phillies fell behind by three runs early last night, but then went on a 20-2 run to obliterate the Rockies, 20-5.

The Phils scored 15 on Sunday in a 15-6 comeback win over the Astros and have improved their Pythagorean (expected) record by a ton (and their regular record by two wins also). Last night, the Phils scored 20 runs despite dealing with the menace of his-and-hers Chase Utley jerseys.

KYW Apparently Pushing Jail For Fliers

052208monopolyjail.jpg
KYW 1060 has yet another story on those race-baiting fliers and once again I am going to write about it. Apparently, the radio station is just extremely pissed off that we can't go out and arrest those stupid skinheads who put them up and defamed Family Guy. Aargh, why can't we just lock up people who say things with disagree with?

This latest story talks to Mayor Nutter and is headlined "Nutter Acknowledges Difficulty of Prosecuting Those Who Distributed Race-Baiting Fliers," making me wonder if Nutter just wishes he could actually prosecute those who put up the fliers.

Fortunately, Mix Master Mike says nothing of the sort! "Much as we don't like some things, we can't always chase after people legally for things we don't like," he says, which sounds fine to me, I guess. And it certainly sounds better than notifying the authorities when you've been offended.

Sigh. Isn't there somebody at KYW or the Human Rights Commission we can lock up for saying this stupid shit? Erhm.

Mayor Disappointed In Murder Suspect

050808nutter.jpg
Eric Floyd, the fugitive suspect in the slaying of police Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski, was captured yesterday. All good.

Then things got surreal:

Afterward, the mayor told reporters said he got within two feet of Floyd. "I looked him dead in the eye when he came in, and I told him how disappointed I was in him," Nutter said. There was no response from the suspect, the mayor added.

Ooh, you showed him, Mr. Mayor! Two feet! Maybe someone can set up a trip for the mayor to death row where he can tell every killer how disappointed he is. "Don't murder, guys! You might let the mayor down!"

Mayor Nutter Loses In Thumbwrestling

042408nutter-thumb.jpg
Clout today has a story of Mayor Nutter's thumb-wrestling adventures during Take Your Daughter Daughters & Sons to Work Day.

The mayor stood for about 40 minutes shaking hands and taking pictures with all the kids in City Hall for the day. Clout reports one boy about 4 or 5 grabbed the mayor's thumb for an impromptu throwdown.

The mayor lost. "He did take me down and I am... I am... really impacted," Nutter said. "I'm dealing with it. By the end of the day, I'm going to track that kid down and demand a rematch."

We all know Nutter is a big nerd from the way he wears a baseball jersey; but is he nerdy enough to play a game of Rock Paper Scissors? As you no doubt have heard, Philadelphia Will Do is now the official sponsor of timeouts for the RPS City League; I almost forgot to call a timeout during my one match Monday.

Tonight's games are at The Dive starting around 9:30. Doesn't look like I'll be there, but if you go, call a timeout and support your local blogger. And I'll work on challenging Mayor Nutter to a friendly game of RPS.

Colbert & Nutter (With Bonus Drama!)

041508colbertstephen.jpg
Okay, so this photo is way too cool to be real. Apparently GPTMC welcomed Stephen Colbert with a big giant party for him and Jason Smith took this photo.

Yes, Mayor Nutter is the both the nerdiest guy ever and a rock star, and I'm still not totally sure how that works. But if it leads to photos like this, who cares! And, wait, there's more: This kinda way long stalking Stephen Colbert piece -- the Dan Gross one is good -- has some blogdrama at the end, where someone accuses CP of copying off this Phillyist article that's trying to get on TV or something. Aw, only 18 Diggs.

Mayor Nutter On Colbert Report

041508nutter.jpg
Last night was the first of four nights of Colbert Report in Philadelphia this week, and Stephen's first local guest was none other than Mayor Michael Nutter. (He also had on Ralph Archbold, aka The Real Ben Franklin.)

The interview segment is pretty funny, especially at the start, and the mayor gets at least one good one-liners in there. (Did you know he has dry wit? Every single article about him now mentions it!) Tomorrow The Roots are on. Sweet. Redlasso video clip is on the permalink page.

Black Man Supports Hillary Clinton

041408nutterlittlepetes.jpg
Hey, did you know that both Barack Obama and Michael Nutter are black? Yes, I know, now that racism no longer exists it's hard to remember who's black and who's white nowadays, but both the frontrunner for the presidential election and the current mayor of Philadelphia have a high melanin count.

And, what do you know, Nutter is supporting Hillary Clinton, who is not only not male but is white!

Vivian McCabe, a grandmother, neighborhood block captain and supporter of both Mr. Nutter and Mr. Obama, expressed the frustration in a sidewalk interview the other day. “I was shocked,” she said, referring to Mr. Nutter’s endorsement of Mrs. Clinton. “Not because he’s black, but — I was just looking at him to...” She paused. “What words should I use?” she said. She could not come up with any.

How do we describe why people are surprised at the black mayor supporting a white candidate without mentioning race? Damn, I don't think we can! And when will Bob Brady support Hillary Clinton (his fellow white person) like he's supposed to!

Nutter Drinks Water At Ballgame

Enrico points out on The 700 Level the above video, where New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg enjoys the Phillies 5-2 win over the Mets yesterday with our very own mayor, Michael Nutter.

But wait! While Bloomberg is enjoying a beer -- that he said he didn't have to pay for himself, that cheap millionaire! -- Nutter is simply enjoying a glass of water. A glass of water? Geeze, way to be healthy, Mr. Mayor. At least get a Coke or something.

Olivia Sadly Missing From New Clinton Ad

Here's Michael Nutter's new ad for Hillary Clinton. (She just released five new ones, including one in Spanish.) Not much to this, although Nutter says she wants to "invest in our communities," which no other candidate wants to do.

Cleanup A Success No Thanks To Me

040808verizonnutter.jpg
Michael Nutter was scheduled to announce this morning the citywide cleanup Saturday was a success; if cleanliness is next to godliness, then Philadelphia has escaped hell for purgatory.

On a report on Fox Saturday night, the mayor said that a clean city is a safe city. And then he added: "23,000 public employees, a million and a half citizens, we can't do it all by ourselves. Your work, Kerri-Lee, and the many others who have gotten involved in this, it really makes a difference."

Woo-hoo! Anybody tells you Philadelphia Will Do makes a difference, you can tell them I didn't post about the citywide cleanup1 and that I strive every day to not make a difference. I do enjoy Nutter's shirt from benevolent corporate sponsor Verizon. There is no doubt Nutter is simply trying to emulate Bernard Hopkins and his GoldenPalace.com temporary tattoo.

Report from Fox 29's Kerri-Lee Halkett after the jump. (Standard Redlasso it-could-kill-your-computer warning.)

Bob Brady Getting Everyone A Job

040408bobbrady.jpg
It's been a while since I've written about Bob Brady, who around this time last year was a daily Philadelphia Will Do post. And, hey, there were two recent Bob Brady stories in the news! So let's link them here:

Phillymag's Steve Volk writes how Mayor Nutter quashed any chances of anybody running against Brady for U.S. Rep. And, ha ha, Nutter basically got the guy who was going to run against Brady a job advising none other than Mayor Nutter! Welcome to politics.

• Inga Saffron of the Inquirer reports on her blog that Brady got a contract to a local company to light the Capitol. It's the same company that installed the lights on City Hall that make the building look like an evil rich family's mansion!

So there's Bob Brady, being, um, a politician. In an unrelated note, Philadelphia Will Do provides five-star consulting services on lighting at one-star prices.

Nutter Tosses Out First Pitch, Is Nerd

033108nutterfirstpitch.jpg

Here's Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter throwing out the first pitch of today's Phillies game. As you may have noticed, he has his shirt tucked in. Joe Moore (you don't know him) told me in fifth grade you don't tuck in a sports jersey, and I learned my lesson. Nutter could rap "Straight Outta Compton" and he'd still be the biggest nerd in all of Philadelphia, just because of that shirt.

Mayor Nutter On 'Meet The Press'

033108nutter.jpg
Even though he wishes the candidates would just stick to the issues like "crime in cities" or "free puppies for rapping mayors", Mayor Nutter was asked about the comments Obama's former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, made. And what do you know! The Clinton supporter says he would drop out of his church if he heard comments like that.

Now the mayor went to St. Joe's Prep and was raised Catholic. He's now Baptist -- which probably means one of those old Jesuits gave a sermon which was just too out there for Nutter. (One time in high school a priest was railing against the evils of the world and said, "Doctors... get to go on vacations... with their families!" I'm pro-doctor vacation, I believe.)

Our esteemed mayor was also on Face the Nation this weekend. Video after the jump.

Mayor Chats With MC Hammer

032808nutterhat.jpg
The Daily News' Catherine Lucey noted yesterday that the mayor met with MC Hammer -- and the pair discussed rapping!

Nutter tells PhillyClout that during the former rap star's visit to the Mayor's office, he played him the YouTube clip of his inauguration party performance of "Rapper's Delight."

And Hammer was impressed. "He thought it was good," Nutter said.

Now that he's locked up Hammer, the endorsement of Vanilla Ice can't be far behind.

Nutter Asks For 10,000 Cleaners

031008nutterclean.jpg
By now you may have heard that Michael Nutter is attempting to clean up our city. He's going to go out with a mop and bucket himself and clean up City Hall (or something), and he wants 10,000 men people to clean up with city on April 5.

He wants us to remove on million pounds of trash from our city's streets on 5,000 city blocks, and he even has a nice press release quote that even tells us when we have to be clean: “I want thousands of Philadelphians to join me out in the streets of this city from 9am to 2pm on April 5th to make our city beautiful."

And after 2 pm: Littering party!

Mayor Finds Way To Watch 'Wire' For Free

NUTTER
Now that The Wire is ending and everyong is letting you know they watch it so they seem so hip, urban and cultured -- and 'cuz it's a good show, no doubt -- it's obvious Michael Nutter is going to get in on that action. He's holding a screening at City Hall on Sunday for the show's finale. He also got HBO to sanction the showing, so he's not committing piracy like we're warned not to on so many FBI and INTERPOL bulletins we can't fast forward through on some DVD players.

"As a fan, it's tremendous," said Nutter. "I want to say thank you to HBO for responding." Oh, yes, benevolent HBO, allowing this free publicity and endorsement from the mayor of a major American city. The final episode of The Wire airs Sunday at 8 p.m.; you can win tickets for the City Hall screening through a couple of newspapers.

What's excellent is how angry people are. Oh, wait, it's the Internet, that's why things are always excellent. The comment on the Daily News story is angry; the comments on Catherine Lucey's blog post about it yesterday were angry. Hey, it's Sunday night at 8. What else is Nutter gonna be doing?

Ex-Con Hired To Hire Ex-Cons

If you've been in Philadelphia for a while, you might remember Ron Cuie, the deputy mayor who tied up and tortured a friend back in 1999. Well, ha ha, he's back in the deputy mayor's position!

This time, though, he's the head of the Mayor's Office for the Reentry of Ex-Offenders, which is appropriate. It seems that as long as you are a former deputy mayor, you can return to your old job (deputy mayor) eventually. Anyway, Nutter, Cuie and (of course) Arlen Specter want to make it so that you don't have to be a deputy mayor in order to have a job coming out of prison.

And here's the best sentence written about his appointment, over at Young Philly Politics: "If he hadn't gone too far, and hadn't ended up beating, tying up, and torturing a companion, it is pretty unlikely that his coke habit would have gotten him thrown in jail."
