I Love The Smell of Napalm In The Morning
As you may have seen on the
CBS Evening News With Katie Couric's Legs last night,
Philadelphia is having a bit of a homicide problem. Well, okay, it's a "homicide problem" in the same way that the Delaware River is "wet." But anyway, you probably didn't see it, actually, since like 14 people watch it, and I'm guessing they're all over the age of 70 and don't have the Internet.
Anyway, now that the homicide crisis has hit national news (uh, again, right?), the mayor has kicked it into high gear and closed a bar where a triple homicide took place after an argument over the Bernard Hopkins fight. (Well, okay, the ridiculous situation might have a lot to do with it, too.)
Anyway, national correspondent Byron Pitts also wrote a blog post about the story, and, hoo, boy.
I’ve seen war up close and there is no mistaking what’s going on in places like Afghanistan and Iraq. War zones have a certain look. A certain feel. There’s even a smell to it. After spending several days in Philadelphia, I must admit there are striking similarities.

Katie Couric Scores 45 To Lead Women To Victory
 |
pwddmac: hey, shouldn't you be out celebrating?
anonymous reader: celebrating?
pwddmac: the metro front page said "LANDMARK BROADCAST SEEN AS A VICTORY FOR WOMEN" re: katie couric
pwddmac: i figured you'd be so happy with your victory you would have taken off work to celebrate.
reader: katie couric is a victory?
pwddmac: apparently
reader: wow, a milf with fabulous legs is doing the nightly news. what a coup.
reader: i had no idea. i'm a bad feminist.
pwddmac: if it's a victory for women, does that mean we men lost?
pwddmac: shit!
pwddmac: oh well, i'm a philadelphia sports fan, i'm used to it.
reader: suckers. have fun with charlie gibson, losers!
pwddmac: ha ha, elizabeth vargas got fired because she was pregnant
pwddmac: did you watch it? it was pretty bad, although i do like katie couric.
pwddmac: she didn't even have a signoff!
pwddmac: and they then showed a clip of famous signoffs, including ron burgundy
pwddmac: then they showed her legs
pwddmac: (a victory for men!)
reader: no, i didn't watch it
reader: i'm only watching the today show now that katie couric is off of it, actually.
reader: her interviews make me cringe.
pwddmac: really? even when she made fun of tom cruise for not knowing what the word "glib" meant?
reader: that was probably the only time i've liked her
pwddmac: hm. so i guess last night's broadcast wasn't a victory for you, then.
reader: ha, not so much.
pwddmac: looks like we men win again!
reader: ha. how much of a victory can it be for women when the only reason she got the job is that she's (relatively) attractive?!
pwddmac: hey, it's not just the headline. vice president of philadelphia's beholder productions, emelia andrews, said "we're all just ecstatic"
pwddmac: looks like you lose your woman journalist license!
reader: as in "beauty is in the eye of the beholder????"
reader: yeah, i'm about to turn in my feminism card, too, if this is a "victory"
pwddmac: okay, back to ogling soledad o'brien

Quickies: Fat Camp Instead Of Summer School?
• City Councilman Michael Nutter knows how to run for mayor: He says he's going to get our kids to stop being fat! This may work with parents, but crotchety old people could be all "How about you show them some manners first!" [KYW 1060]
• Your Anthony DiMeo update, courtesy of Metro DiMeo beat reporter Josh Cornfield: "He said in previously filed court documents that the comments made about him on Max’s site caused him to live 'in constant fear for his safety and the safety of his loved ones.' DiMeo said in the documents that he was forced to seek out psychological counseling, that he suffered a loss of privacy and his business was affected."
• Hey, when he's not bashing those free AOL CDs about five years after people forgot what AOL is, and when he's not playing with his doggy, we can always count on John Grogan for some good old fashioned Philadelphia optimism. Wait. Philadelphia optimism? [Inky]
• We Americans say goodbye to Katie Couric. Only, uh, she's just going to be doing the news on a different station. Is she really leaving? [Gawker]

Leftovers: All Katie, All The Time
• Pigeons have invaded Juniata and they won't leave! This report is notable for the closing line: "While the pigeons are as free as a bird the people in the neighborhood are not." Seriously, watch the video. [CBS 3]
• I'd be able to take this list of Katie Couric's liberal bias more seriously if example number two wasn't "Katie thinks gas prices are too high." No, really. [Media Research Center]
• That New Jersey transgender sub has yet to be called in this year to teach. There's actually a hotline parents can call to see who the subs are that day, so they can hold their kids out of school in case it's the one who used to be a man. Hooray for progress! [Philadelphia Gay News]
• There's a reality show at Drexel being filmed right now that has a parent living with a son or daughter during school. Oh, and at least one dad does kegstands. It's like the creepy old guys at homecoming each and every day! [KYW 1060]
