Mayoral Race Cards

120506mondesire.jpg
In a city that can't even have a black quarterback throwing to and feuding with his black wide receiver without race somehow entering into the picture, it's no surprise that race can't stay out of the mayor's race -- uhh, the other kind of race -- either.

NAACP head/snazzy hat wearer/attention whore Jerry Mondesire -- hey, he was involved in McNabb thing, too! -- blasted Brady yesterday for making Saidel drop out of the mayor's race so he could run and not have to face another white candidate. Well, that's Mondesire said happened, and that seems about right, although it probably has more to do with getting any candidates with bowl haircuts out of the race.

Then again, it's Mondesire, and although he should be trusted a little more on politics than on sports, it seems like he just wants to be able to get black voters to rally around -- guess who? -- his candidate, Dwight Evans.

What does this all mean? Well, it's like a lot of things in Philadelphia: Sure, it's about race in part, but it's way more about the enormous egos of everyone involved. Hey, would we have it any other way? Hell, I'm voting for the late Frank Rizzo!

101 QB Rating Not Enough For Some People

102706mondesire.jpg
Remember last year, when Jerry Mondesire wrote that stupid thing about how Donovan McNabb hated black people because he didn't run enough?

No? Oh, well let me remind you: It was the stupidest, most pointless thing ever written in the history of the English language. Jerry Mondesire's essay about McNabb made Christine Flowers look like George Eliot. It made the Philadelphia blogosphere look like The Collected Works Of English Literature, Vol. II, only with more slightly liberalism. Hell, it made Godfather III look like Godfather II.

Well, according to Gar Joseph, he's baaaaaaaack! Yes, that's right, Mondesire wants to bash McNabb again, despite his status as possibly the NFL MVP after seven weeks.

But, coming off last weekend's loss to Tampa Bay, McNabb is again in Mondesire's sights.

"He can't even keep his lunch down in a tight game," Mondesire said earlier this week, adding he'll write about McNabb again soon.

Boy! I can't wait! To ignore this piece of trash column just like last time! Won't youse join me?

Boulevard of broken dreams

Coretta Scott King, wife of MLK, died Monday night in Baja California, Mexico. Sad news. And, as expected, leaders around the nation are expressing their sadness. (Bloggers, too.)

In Philadelphia, we had Philly NAACP head J. Wyatt Mondesire chiming in:

We don't have those kind of people around anymore. And that's the kind of void that we have to carry now, that a woman who was almost saintly is now gone. And who can carry that on? I don't know. I just don't know.

He then added, "But, you know, in recent years Ms. King had stopped running with the ball and tried to be too much like a white civil rights leader. Frankly, Coretta is a testament of fallen dreams who perpetuated a fraud while hiding behind excuses dripping in make-believe racial stereotypes."

A Week Without Metro

122705metrolessweek.gif

Although Jesus brought all of us lots of Christmas presents, I am still a little bummed about the biggest loss of the holiday season: the one-week lack of Metro.

Indeed, Philadelphia's free daily tab is not publishing this week, leaving me with even less material in an already news-free week. But fear not! Even though there's no Metro this week, I'll be delivering what you would have read were there an edition. Today I'll start with none other than the "Today's Debate," always a Philadelphia Will Do favorite:

See? It's like it never left!

Just rush right past this one, folks

121605rush.jpg Okay, so I haven't really commented on the whole Donovan McNabb sold out his race or whatever tripe Jerry Mondesire wrote in his newspaper last week. I didn't really expect it to blow up at all, since it was clearly written by someone who had never seen an Eagles game ever in his life.

Seriously. Even the non-sports fan could answer the question, "What was Donovan McNabb's best year?" Hint: It was the year the Eagles went to the Super Bowl. And that year, McNabb ran for the fewest number of yards until this injury-plagued season. So to say that McNabb is better when he runs is kind of silly. As for the other stuff? Eh, whatever. It sounds pretty equally stupid to me. Even the head of the national NAACP said Mondesire's comments were stupid.

Anyway, so let's move on: So Rush Limbaugh -- surprise! -- has now entered the fray, and while I must admit Ol' Rush clearly knows his football, he's a little off base with his "Oh the Philly media is only building up McNabb 'cause he's black." Which is silly. The Philly media builds up every superstar athlete (except Bobby Abreu). And now a lot of people in the media are criticizing him. And Rush thinks McNabb shouldn't be criticized, blah blah blah. Whatever. But what caught my eye after perusing his transcripts was this:

I got an example of this just published today by some clown named Rich Hoffman.

Ha! Now this is the kind of media catfighting that deserves to be written about. Hoffman probably won't respond, though, so unfortunately this will probably die here. But we can all hope it won't.

Quickies: Surprise, surprise, surprise

• A bit of housekeeping: two more essays this week, tomorrow and Friday. In the meantime, perhaps you'd like to read Monday's?

• In a shocker, the Kimmel Center has no money! Well, it's $30 mil in debt, at least. [Inky]

• Donovan McNabb to Jerry Mondesire's ridiculously stupid comments: "I always thought the NAACP supported African-Americans, not talked bad about them." Oh, snap. [NBC 10]

• A strange blind item in Dan Gross' column today: "A local university president may want to polish up the old resume. We're told the school's board of trustees feels the prez is a control freak and thinks the answer is to bring in new blood." [DN]

Quickies: Don't call him D-Mac

• A bit of housekeeping: Yes, the links are darker now. Easier to read? And in case you're wondering, re the essay yesterday: My plan for now is to do a few per week, say three. But we'll see where that leads.

• Ahh, Jerry Mondesire says that Donovan McNabb doesn't care about black people. He says that McNabb changed from a running quarterback to a passer and that made him a worse player and it was race-related. Um, okay. All I have to say: Football-wise, running quarterbacks haven't quite done so well, have they? Or did I forget the six Super Bowls Fran Tarkenton and Michael Vick have won? [Attytood]

• I didn't know there was a list like this, and it's kind of amusing: Santa Claus tops Forbes' Fictional 15. Not that he's not real. Oh snap! Somehow I think Forbes just crushed the dreams of a million kids. [Life, Family at al]

• If you're into the whole "stuffing your face with good food thing," The Reading Terminal Market is now open on Sundays. Mmm... cookies. [Metroblogging Philadelphia via dragonballyee]

• Being fans of local community newspapers and the pointless stories contained within -- and a media nerd also -- I was excited to read this, even though it's from England: Shopping cart found 30 minutes from store. Oh, man. That really might be the most boring story in the history of newspapers. [Londonist]
