A Not So Different Kind Of Republican

062708hugeasshole.jpg

The different kind of Republican you see above is Dale Gladding. He's running for Congress in New Jersey, which means he has no shot. The man who currently holds the seat he wants is Rob Andrews, recent victim of Frank Lautenberg in the Democratic Senate primary. Andrews held a Congressional hearing on transgender rights in the workplace, and Gladding wasn't happy about it.

"While the families of the 1st District are struggling to make ends meet, with gas prices reaching $4 a gallon," GOP candidate Dale Glading said, "Rob Andrews has demonstrated once and for all how out of touch he is with the people he has failed to represent."

"We're not making a statement one way or another about transgender rights," Tim Saler, Glading's campaign manager, said. "We're just saying that if you had a list of things that need addressing right now, transgender rights would not be at the top."

Are we to assume Rob Andrews is incapable of addressing both gas prices (which he really can't do anything about) and transgender rights (which he might be able to, by chairing a subcommittee)?

Glading's campaign manager's statement is even more annoying. If you're going to say, "I don't care about transgender rights," (or anything similar about any issue) you have to take the criticism that could come with that statement. You can't say, "Transgender rights are not important," and also say, "I'm not making a statement on transgender rights." And Andrews isn't even running for re-election. And you're a Republican in fucking New Jersey who is running for a seat which represents, say, Collingswood and Haddonfield (and other towns where lots of gay people live) and you say things that will make no gay people vote for you and, seriously, how fucking stupid are you?

New rule: I don't want to go on a rant here. But, come on.

Boy Scouts Sue City

052708boyscout.jpg
The Boy Scouts have sued the city for attempting to kick the local council out of its building near the Parkway. For the uninitiated: Those who do their duty to do their best to God and their country also don't allow gays to do any of that in their little club, so the city decided it was kicking the Cradle of Liberty Council out of its 22nd and Winter building (which the city leases to the Scouts for one dollar a year.)

The Scouts' lawsuit says the city leases property to about 100 groups with membership criteria for under $2,000 a year, without any attempt to kick them out of their properties.

The lawsuit mentions the Roman Catholic Church of the Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which the suit says has paid a nominal rent for a church building in Pennypack Park since 1935; Zion Baptist Church, which pays $25 a year to lease three parcels of recreational land for the Clara Baldwin Home for seniors; and Women for Greater Philadelphia and the Colonial Dames of America, which have free perpetual leases for historic mansions in Fairmount Park. "This city allows numerous organizations to use city-owned property and does not necessarily refuse them based on restrictions on membership," said Center City lawyer Jason P. Gosselin, who filed the suit on behalf of the Cradle of Liberty Council.

City Solicitor Shelley R. Smith said she believes the difference between the Boy Scouts and the other groups that lease city land or buildings is that the other groups do not discriminate in the social services they provide. Smith said you cannot be a Boy Scout if you are openly gay or an atheist: "If we find that these other groups are doing that, we will take the appropriate action."

You got that, atheists? You gotta get down to the courthouse and file all your complaints against the Colonial Dames of America.

In related news, Congress is having a fundraiser for the Boy Scouts. Up to $3.5 million! Update: And Ron Paul voted for the bill. He secretly loves the federal reserve!

Gossip Girlfriend

The oh-so-clever use of "gay" as an insult did not sway us: Gossip Girlfriend is back for one last hurrah. Yes, last night was the season finale, and since Sarah and I can't plan anything past, say, this weekend, we're declaring it the end of the feature youse all love so much, Gossip Girlfriend. But not before a recap of last night's episode!

(Note: If you actually like the show, or hate it, or something, New York pretty much owns the Gossip Girl recap genre; one of the co-writers of NYM's blog is Jessica Pressler, etc., etc.)

Same-Sex Marriage Ban Tabled

050708gaymarriage.jpg
The state Senate has decided to table the constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, meaning that all that time the senators wasted debating this is, well, still wasted.

House leaders said if the bill passed the Senate it would be sent to the "House State Government Committee," which apparently not only exists but is chaired by Babette Josephs, who opposes the bill. (She'd no doubt fight extra hard because her district includes the Gayborhood.)

But Vince Fumo knows otherwise! He says the Senate would probably strip the language also banning gays from the “functional equivalent” of marriage (i.e. civil unions). "I think there were enough votes to strip that out and I think that’s what scared them," Fumo told KYW 1060 "So they needed an excuse, and the excuse was the House. Which is fine with me, any face-saver they want is good with me."

Fumo would, of course, let them save face while telling the radio station exactly why the bill was tabled.

Same-Sex Marriage Ban Out Of Committee

050608fumoscan.jpg
A state senate committee on wasting time yesterday voted 18-8 to send the ban on same-sex marriage to the full senate.

The bill will probably pass in a vote as early as tomorrow, but the AP reports it might not matter: There's no similar bill in the house, and chances of any bill passing there are slim with Democratic control. (But, boy, wouldn't it be interesting to see how Speaker O'Brien votes on it!) People rallied against the bill after it went out of committee.

Notorious funnyman/lame duck state senator Vince Fumo noted his fellow lawmakers would also vote for genocide, bloodletting, a flat earth, Zeus and bronze tools.

Fumo Says He Was Exaggerating

050108fumo.jpg
Okay, so Fumo. Yes, Tuesday he said that Pennsylvania state lawmakers would enact slavery if they had the chance to. (In case you never went to school or are just a moron, slavery is forbidden by an amendment to the Constitution, but whatever.)

Now he's distancing himself from those comments, saying he was "only exaggerating to make a point."

"If a majority would vote to approve slavery - as was done once in this country - that wouldn't make it right," he said. "I wanted people at the hearing to face the fact that denying human rights to any group, including homosexuals, at any point in our history, including in 2008, is wrong." The governor said he would veto any slavery bill, anyway. No word if Fumo thinks slavery has enough support to override the veto.

Fox 29 had the bishop who got into the exchange with Fumo; senior pastor Gilbert Coleman was there to testify against gay marriage. He's surprisingly calm about the whole thing. I guess when you spend all your time hating gays it's pretty easy to be calm otherwise. Redlasso clip after the jump.

Obama Shockingly Answers Question

042108syphillis.jpg

Above: The bottom half of Friday's Philadelphia Gay News cover.

042108epgn.jpg
Aw. It looks like the Philadelphia Gay News daily email annoyance is over, as Publisher Mark Segal emailed over the weekend to let everyone know his one question for Barack Obama has been answered, "thanks to our friends at Capitol wire."

And, guess what? Obama would advise those "Pennsylvania Democrat State Senator's" to vote no on the anti-gay marriage amendment to the state constitution, just like everyone already knew.

It's good the Gay News finally had this question answered before Barack Obama dies of his untreated syphilis, which he's had for almost 1600 days.

Chelsea Clinton Has The Ass Of Life

042108chelsea.jpg

Photo via Brett Lieberman, Pennsyltucky Politics

Chelsea Clinton was in town Friday night, and boy did she have a fabulous time! And why not: She hit all the gay bars in Center City, along with Ed Rendell and Rob Reiner. She even went to Tavern on Camac and Sisters! (Her pub crawl also included Woody's and Bump. What, no Uncle's?)

When Chelsea was little, Rush Limbaugh called her ugly and everybody got mad at him. But nobody's calling Chelsea unattractive now. "Chelsea, the gays love you," shouted one gay person. "We love your highlights -- you're gorgeous baby!" said another, which prompted bisexual hottie Anne Dicker to say, "Maybe they're swingers." Sadly, Chelsea could not visit the now-closed Club Kama Sutra to find out.

Gay Hooker Taping Sex Scandal In Pa.!

041008videotaper.jpg
While they're sending reporters around to follow Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton as they criss-cross the state, let's hope the media can spend some time to get to Pennsylvania's Cumberland County. There's a bit of a scandal here! Former County Commissioner Bruce Barclay has been accused of raping another man and cops say when they searched his house they found "100 to 500" secretly videotaped sexual encounters between Barclay and other men, many of them male prostitutes.

And these guys were almost as expensive as Eliot Spitzer's call girl!

The affidavit describes several such encounters with an Internet escort service known as “harrisburgfratboys.com.” Court documents indicate Barclay twice flew a 19-year-old man referred to as “W.M.” to his West Palm Beach home. During a trip last month, “W.M” told investigators that Barclay flew a male prostitute from Binghamton, N.Y., and paid that man $1,500.

'Gay News' Runs Cover Of The Year

Today's Philadelphia Gay News cover is simply fantastic. PGN publisher Mark Segal tells The Daily Examiner Obama hasn't spoken to the gay press since 2004, which is "not acceptable" to him.

I suppose this is as good a time as any to remind you that Barack Obama has been on 610 WIP twice in the last month.

State Senate Candidates Suck Up

031808lgbt.jpg
Hey, all the First District candidates love the gays:

Two of the candidates - Anne Dicker and Larry Farnese - support gay marriage. John J. Dougherty says he is in favor of civil unions but would back legislation "to extend marriage to same-sex couples." All three have promised to fight any effort to pass a constitutional amendment defining marriage as existing only between a man and a woman and say they back legislation banning discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Anne Dicker, you may know, is bisexual -- but she's married to a man, so don't get your hopes up, ladies.

I Miss College

Students at the event also discussed whether Islam forbade being attracted to people of the same sex, or only homosexual acts.

Wharton and Engineering junior and MSA member Danish Munir said that while the Koran does not specifically mention homosexuality, homosexual acts are forbidden.

Other students agreed, noting it was acts of sodomy that are forbidden, not a homosexual mindset.

After the meeting, the feedback was widely positive.

Report Shows Everything Wrong With People, Media

Lu Ann Cahn recently reported on a couple in Kensington who say they're being gay-bashed. They've called police dozens of times. The couple says their tires have been slashed, slurs have been used and someone left a steel penis on their doorstep. Cahn says "the phallic-shaped steel rod is a symbol of hate."

Anyway, a neighbor interviewed said it's not that they're gay. It's that they're annoying and people are just using gay slurs because they're gay.

"It's not that he's gay. We just don't like the things that he wants to do," said neighbor William Parks.

Parks admitted he doesn't like the bathtub the couple has put in the courtyard between their homes and there have been neighborhood scuffles.

"But I mean why, if it doesn't have anything to do with them being gay, why does someone spray-paint faggot? Why is there an assault? Why is there a penis on their steps?" Cahn asked.

"That would be just like if, say I was getting, got mad at somebody and I holler, 'Here (expletive).' You understand what I'm trying to say? And call me, 'Hey you (expletive),' or something like that. That would be the same thing," Parks said.

"Well, someone just put a steel penis on their doorstep," Cahn asked two women.

"What's that about?" one of the women asked sarcastically.

"That could have been them that put it," she added.

"You think they put it there?" Cahn asked, getting the response, "Probably."

"Why would they do that?" Cahn pressed.

"Because they're sick, probably," the women answered.

A bold step for equality for all in this news report.

McGreevey: I'm Worse Than Larry Craig, Idiots

090407mcgreevey.jpg

Despite entering an Episcopalian seminary recently, noted gay ex-New Jersey governor/creepmeister Jim McGreevey hasn't been in the news much lately. And how to rectify that? Why, by sending a letter about toilet senator Larry Craig to the Washington Post!

The opinion piece, which ran yesterday, talks about how hard it was to grow up gay (because of card catalogs, for some reason) and uses the special interest group phrase "gay American" again. And then he compares himself to Larry Craig in a way one might not expect.

I can only pray that Larry Craig and his loving family come to peace with his truth, whatever that may be. To those who judge him harshly, I ask that they fill their hearts with compassion and equanimity. The senator did not have a lover on the payroll, as I did; nor did he engage in sexual relations for money or use his office for unethical professional or personal gain.

Hmm, perhaps this is actually a Jim McGreevey impersonator writing in the Washington Post. It didn't have a "Baba Booey" at the end of it, though, so probably not.

Preacher Who Sucked Cock Invites Gays To Church

082907gaypriestapparently.jpg
Across the river in Jersey, they do have the gay civil unions, due to a state Supreme Court ruling and subsequent law passed. But not everyone is on board, and not just the Catholics.

The pastor of the Cumberland County Community Church put up a sign advertising "Help for the homosexual" at his service this weekend, and NBC 10 was kind enough to go interview him about how much he hates the gays.

Turns out -- and here's a shocker! -- the speaker delivering this speech, Greg Quinlan, is gay himself. Well, okay, he's "ex-gay," and believes he can turn people from same-sex attraction to the Lord because he repressed it well enough, didn't he?

The church's pastor says, hey, anybody can be ex-gay if you just pray hard enough! "He has been set free, and because he has been set free in Christ, others can be set free also." Yeah, yeah. NBC 10 even interviewed some dudes on the street, and came up with an excellent closing line:

"I think they should help gay people so they can stop being gay," Joel Ortiz, of Millville, said.

"I think that's pretty misleading. I guess, because I don't believe that can happen," Saida Sawyer, of Morristown, N.J., said.

[The pastor] said he is simply teaching the truth. Others, though, said his ideas of faith are filled with fiction.

Apparently, There Is This Thing Called The 'Gayborhood'

071607gaytourism.jpg
As you may know if you are me and you live in it and walk through it every day on your way to the office, there are a lot of gays in a certain section of Philadelphia, helpfully called the Gayborhood. A few years ago, the city realized gay people have a ton of disposable income and started marketing trips to Philadelphia for them; according to a report in 2005, Philly made $153 for every dollar spent on marketing.

But now with more places marketing to gays and lesbians -- perhaps copying off Philly, a twist worthy of M. Night -- Philly has to get a little more creative. The secret? Marketing toward... ah, groups of people, I guess.

With so much competition, it's important for cities to play to their strengths, said Ben Finzel, co-founder of Out Front Blog. If they're marketing to single gay men, for example, they should advertise opportunities for meeting other gay singles. Older gay couples might be more interested in hotels, dining options and historic sites. [...]

John Wermuth, 43, who lives in Atlanta, visits Philadelphia about once a year. On a recent trip, he went to Independence Hall, the Museum of Art and the theater -- the same attractions that draw mainstream tourists. When he visits, he stays at the Alexander Inn, a gay-owned hotel in the heart of the "gayborhood," an area of gay-friendly stores and restaurants.

But, as usual, the comment section wins the award for "most interesting part," especially this comment by Camden Beer: "How much does the city pay per year to pick up used condoms that are littered everywhere on Chestnut Street?"

Idiot Hates Gays, Writes Column About It

070307scouts.jpg
There's a short opinion piece in the current edition of the Northeast Times about the ongoing saga of the Boy Scouts and that building the city is probably going to kick them out of. The national Boy Scouts organization prohibits gays from joining their little club. This is the group's right, of course, but the city also has the right to stop giving them free prime real estate on the Parkway since they won't let Bruce and Lance into the club.

The opinion piece is by Robert Knight. He's the director of the Culture and Media Institute, which is a conservative group that writes about how the evil liberals in Hollywood and the media are going to make sure this country is overrun by gays and Muslims (who are great friends, you know!) and Mexicans and whoever else isn't Christian.

Now, Knight is attempting to convince you the Scouts should stay in the building. The column contains all the normal lies -- all homosexuals are pedophiles, not many priests molested kids actually, homosexuals shouldn't be role models, etc. -- and preaching to the choir, but the intro is like a bad joke I'd reject:

Philadelphia has big city problems. The murder rate is on the rise, and gangs make some areas unsafe even in the daytime. It’s no secret that fatherless, undisciplined boys are the main reason the streets are deadly.

So what is the city doing about it? Let’s imagine for a moment that we’re in a Philadelphia City Council discussion.

"How about a crackdown on gangs? Or a crackdown on drug dealers?"

"Nah. Those people shoot back. I’ve got it! Let’s persecute the Boy Scouts! They won’t give the police any trouble."

"Yeah, this will be a great way to pay back those gay groups for donating to our campaigns. The media will love us, too. Watch how they’ll frame this: ‘Enlightened Officials Reign in Hateful, Bigoted Boy Scouts!’ Good for us! Now, let’s take a Starbucks break!"

Ha ha! What a knee-slapper!

"Now, Daniel," you might be saying here. "This sort of sounds like some sort of post you would make when you're really stretching to find a joke." Agreed! The only problem is, I am trying to make you laugh (and probably failing, if I did it this way); if you don't laugh, it has very little consequence for me except maybe a thread or two on Phillyblog where they write mean things about me and oh no whatever will I do!

"Now, Daniel," you might be saying here. "Isn't it a little odd that the Boy Scouts want to ban gays. Aren't the Boy Scouts pretty much the gayest group imaginable already?" Hey, I make the jokes here!

Cloning Gays Is Totally Out Of The Question

062507gaydeathpenalty.jpg
It's nice to know (for me, at least) that if I do take a week off, there will be plenty of material waiting for me when I return. But more on this later; new material has simply appeared, like magic, in today's Inquirer. I speak, of course, of Faye Flam's "Carnal Knowledge" column.

Today's piece is about gays, and why people hate them. The headline is pretty clear: "What fuels the hatred of homosexuality?" What makes the column more interesting than usual: There's no mention of the Bible at all. It's like writing a column about the cause of the American Civil War and not mentioning slavery.

Flam instead focuses on the "ick factor" of (for the most part) straight men, who abhor the idea of two men kissing or assfucking or whatever. This makes sense, of course; to be honest, I feel men are so disgusting I can't even understand how straight women find men attractive. (I suppose if they didn't it would be the end of the species; mankind is saved because not everyone is as neurotic as I am.) "Isn't it kind of babyish to declare gays immoral because you think their sex lives are icky?" Flam writes. Of course, what if your all-knowing and all-powerful god decides two men shouldn't hook up? Hey, I don't get it either, but who are we to doubt omniscience?

Okay, so lotsa men don't like gays (and, therefore, gay marriage) because they feel it's icky. After finally mentioning religious teachings, Flam also cites a study by Leon Kass, who worked with President Bush: "Kass' essay focused not on gay marriage, but on human cloning, which, he wrote, makes us uneasy for a reason." This is like citing an essay on the Panic of 1837 in my hypothetical Civil War column.

But, really, it all comes down to one thing: We (not me, but the royal "American") hate gays because we hate smokers. And, ah, carnivores.

Rozin suggests that liberals tend to go after smokers partly for the same reason. It's far from a perfect analogy, and I'm not really bothered by smokers. To me, slaughterhouses are disgusting and cast doubt on the morality of buying supermarket steak (although not enough to stop me from eating a hamburger at a barbecue).

And what do they call cigarettes in England? I rest my case.

Congrats, Gay People! Soon You Can Work In Pa.!

061307liberace.jpg
A bill going through the state legislature would guarantee the right of men who hook up with other men (and women who hook up with other women) to work in Pennsylvania, as long as they do their job competently.

In Pennsylvania, it's perfectly legal to fire a worker simply because that person is gay.

A bill that would outlaw that sort of discrimination is to be introduced today in the state Legislature. The bill would also make it illegal to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation for housing and credit.

Oh, just wait 'til this gets voted on. Those voting nay will be tarred and feathered, people. Well, electronically, I guess.

Gayborhood Officially Renamed Gayborhood

041907streetsign.jpg
Not content to let the city's gay tourists find the Gayborhood just by looking for the transvestite prostitutes and drug dealers, our fair city has finally officially designated the Gayborhood the, uh, Gayborhood.

Well, there are now rainbow flags on the street signs from 11th to Broad and Chestnut to Pine. (Aw, I guess I miss living in the Gayborhood by a block or so.) Says Tami Sortman of the Philadelphia gay tourism caucus: "If we're welcoming gays and lesbians, then we need to show them where the gayborhood is."

Fair enough. Strike a blow for civil rights -- if, uh, rainbow flags on the street signs in an area where there are already 2.2 million rainbow flags can be considered such -- and make some sweet cash at the same time? Now that's a good idea.

Not that everyone is all that excited. NBC 10 spoke with area resident Kathleen Vaughan, who worries the official Gayborhood designation will, uh... I dunno.

“It’s a mixed group of people,” [Kathleen] Vaughan said. “The Parker Hotel used to be a place for mentally ill.”

Despite the opposition, Philadelphia joins San Francisco, Chicago, Montreal and Toronto, which all have gay-friendly districts.

Yes, despite the opposition of Kathleen Vaughan, the Gayborhood remains popular in large liberal cities. Anyway, the mentally ill can live in the Mentally Illborhood. Or call it Midtown Village. Actually, that's much worse than any other name.

Going-Away Party For Eternal Damnation

041707celebrate.jpg
Colleen Ott was born Catholic, converted to the Baptist denomination -- heathen! -- at 17 and most recently was a member of the Pennypack Baptist Church in Northeast Philly.

In June, she was even named a deacon, which means she could distribute communion and get superpowers or something. Last month, though, she came out as a lesbian.

Naturally, the church told her she couldn't be a deacon anymore unless she went to gay therapy and she's now with a new parish, First Baptist Church of Philadelphia in Center City. As you can tell by the name, this was rated the best Baptist church in Philly by Phillymag. It also has a pastor who said: "When Jesus was preaching the Gospel, he never said, 'Only the straights shall eat at my Father’s table.'"

But her old church wasn't so bad, really. Although the Rev. Tony Tilford and his wife, co-pastor Jean-Marie Tilford, wanted to her to join either Harvest International Ministries or Exodus International, two groups that try to de-gayify people, they did want her to be happy:

She said the Tilfords offered to throw a going-away party for her, but Ott declined.

"Goodbye, Colleen! Enjoy hell! It's a shame, we all kind of liked you, too."

Tom Knox: Gays Play Hard, Work Harder

041007smithers.jpg
The Philadelphia Gay News ran question-and-answers with the candidates in last week's issue and the results were kind of interesting. Michael Nutter doesn't support same-sex marriage, though he supports giving all the benefits of marriage to same-sex couples.

Dwight Evans supports abstinence-only education, while Bob Brady's answer to that question was: "I support all education on any level." Evans did give my favorite answer to any question, in response to a query if he had any gay staffers: "I don’t know. I’ve never asked."

But the best answer to that or any question certainly comes from Tom Knox:

Yes. I have gays working both on the campaign and in the workplace. Gays tend to be studious workers.

"And Asians, man, are they ever so smart. I hire a lot of them. Italians make-a the good pasta, and if I had a bar, I'd love having Irish customers, since they drink so much. And if I ever buy a basketball team, you know I'm going to have a ton of black people on it!"

'Bulletin' Columnist: I Hate Bundles Of Sticks

032107anncoulter.jpg
Most columnists used the Ann Coulter situation -- where she called John Edwards a faggot (har de har har!) -- to call her an idiot, then pat themselves on the back for bashing a provocative political commentator for doing her shtick.

But not Ed Kelley in The Bulletin. No, Kelley wrote what is, by far, the best column ever written. And, by best, I mean, of course, worst. (And best for me, since I can make fun of it.)

I'm going to parse it after the jump, but you can get a preview too.

Unlike some "experts" who claim pedophilia and homosexual behavior are different things altogether, it looks like the Pope has figured out the connection.

In his papal laboratory, clearly. Follow me after the jump for a discussion of... wow, just wow.
