Government Attack On New Jersey Going Swimmingly
While I originally thought the giant fire currently destroying New Jersey's Pine Barrens was originally just an homage to the best
Sopranos episode ever, apparently there's a more direct culprit for the fire.
Will Bunch checks in from the front lines of citizen journalism and tells us that not only did an F-16 fighter jet cause the blaze during a practice run but also the Air Force is giving people money to evacuate since their houses are going to burn down.
The blaze would have gotten even more out of hand, had a loyal Circuit City employee not turned in a tape somebody had asked him to dub.

New Jersey: On Fire!
Well, now that officials have given up hope -- Nothing, guys? Not even "giant fire extinguisher"? -- it's time to say goodbye to the state of New Jersey, which will be burnt to the ground in a few weeks.

Keystone Cops: Why Not Easy Buttons?
Keystone Cops is a look at police, crime and public safety news.
• Twenty Montco schools will respond to the Amish school shooting and the Springfield suicide by getting panic buttons. Yes! Panic buttons! They'll be able to communicate with police and such, too, so I suppose it's all good. [Doylestown Intelligencer]
• A former Camden County volunteer fire chief has been convicted of arson. It's always the one you most suspect. [KYW 1060]
• A Widener College student has been arrested for allegedly beating a dog to death in the woods. The dead dog's name is not known, but he's sure to get just as many letters as Barbaro did. What? A dead dog can read just as well as a live horse! [NBC 10]
• A Bensalem 14-year-old who allegedly wrote bomb threats on the walls of Bensalem High has been arrested and charged with threatening to use a weapon of mass destruction. This is coincidentally the same charge used to invade Iraq. Who knew? [AP/Philly.com]
• And they appeared to have caught him now? I think? But last week Fox News reported police in England were contacting Atlantic City cops to see if there were any links between the two cases. Uh, yeah. [Fox News via Philly Confidential]

Quickies: Slow News Day
• The Phillies didn't give up 10 runs two games ago, so they were due: Nationals 10, Phillies 4. Sigh. [AP/Yahoo!]
• A fire underground near City Hall shut down lots and lots of SEPTA service today, but everything was pretty much back up and running by 8 a.m. Of course, people were pissed, but people are pretty pissed every day anyway. [KYW 1060]
• Oh, no, some gas stations have run out of gas! It's the 70s! Let's listen to shitty dance music, get swine flu shots and worry about malaise! Then we'll elect Reagan after it all ends! Aaaaaaaahhhhh! [Inky]
• And, cops made short work of two home invasion suspects in the Northeast. They're, uh, dead. [NBC 10]

Quickies: You kids can stay on my lawn all you want
• In a piece that I have quickly dubbed The Greatest Article Of All Time Until I Get Old, an economist argues that younger workers are paid too little -- while older workers are paid too much. Viva revolución! [Slate]
• Book retailer Powells.com has teamed up with hip literary/commentary/etc. site The Morning News to judge a bracket of The Best Books of the Year. Somehow, Billy Packer will argue that not enough major conference books were selected for the bracket. [The Morning News]
• A girl angry at her dad's punishment lit a fire that ended up killing her father, a police officer, when he tried to save her. She's being charged as an adult with murder, arson, &c. [DN]
• Sigh. The once venerable I. Goldberg chain is down to one last store. I'm pretty sure it all went downhill when they decided to put one in Franklin Mills. [Inky]
