Philly.com Is On Drugs -- Really
Be still my heart. It's like my two worlds (drug column and blog where I have made fun of Philly.com for almost three years) have collided! The current Philly.com front page is about stoner comedies. Yes, the paper that wrote about the area's "marijuana overdoses" last November has its film critic writing about movies that essentially have weed as the main character.
As you may have also noticed, the other big story tonight is: OMG the giant fat cat is going to be on Regis tomorrow everybody celebrate like gangbusters!!!

Fat Cat Biggest Story Locally Yesterday
You had to know the fat New Jersey cat was going to end up as the main story on Philly.com at some point. (This was from yesterday.) If this cat was homeless and lived in Rittenhouse Square, though, the Inquirer would be calling for it to be executed.
Thanks, John

Aww, Cutest Protest Ever!
Yesterday, about 100 dog lovers -- along with their yawning four-legged friends --
protested in Harrisburg yesterday in favor of new legislation against puppy mills. As you may know, the Amish -- who I can write anything about because they don't have the Internet -- and other unsavory types run a ton of puppy mills in Pennsylvania. I believe we're the "Puppy Mill Capital of the East Coast." (We're #1! We're #1!)
"If you're a breeder that doesn't give a dog adequate water every day, doesn't give it food free from toxins, and doesn't take the dog out of the cage to clean the cage," said Rep. James Casorio Jr., D-Westmoreland, the bill's prime sponsor. "We're coming after you today."
Meanwhile, inmates in Philadelphia have roughly the same conditions as puppy mills and this protest was covered and the marijuana march much closer to home wasn't and blah blah blah. Aww, doggies!

The Beagle Wins! The Beagle Wins!
Oh, yes! Despite
my doom and gloom prediction yesterday, the judge sided with the (extremely loud!) crowd and
Uno the Beagle is your Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Champion! This makes him the President of Dogs, I think, just like Miss America is the President of Women.
Uno beat out a couple other solid dogs in the final, including a poodle that has won something like 750,000 Best in Shows. (There was also a pretty cute Akita who was my second choice. The Weimaraner also ran more graceful than any animal I've ever seen.) Uno howled after his victory and celebrated as if he knew he had won; the crowd went bananas. You think the Knicks fired Isiah the Garden was so loud.
The longtime announcer for the dog show on USA, David Frei, told the Associated Press this is going to be the most popular dog show champion in a while. (And 2006 champ Rufus the Colored Bull Terrier made two appearances at the Kennel Club of Philadelphia's show last year.) "If he wins best in show, I'll rent him an apartment in New York City because I'll be traveling with him all year, so many people will want to see him," Frei said. "If he won, it would be the greatest thing for our show."
Ooh, do I sense some sort of mainstreaming of Westminster? Will angry poodle owners stage a protest? Whatever. The cute beagle won. Yay!
By the way, until Uno won the best line of the night was the judge for the Working Group, who the camera picked up saying, "Move that bitch up." This needs to be in a dance remix, STAT.
Update: Aww, and look at this photo!

Cute Doggies Take Over Dog Show
Tonight is the second and final day of competition at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, the annual cutesy wutesy exhibition at Madison Square Garden. While dogs like poodles and bull terriers usually win these shows, last year an English Springer Spaniel (i.e. a dog I find cute) won. And last night, a beagle -- a beagle! -- won the Hound Group for the first time since 1939.
While a poodle also advanced, Uno the beagle has an actual shot to win tonight. Let's all root for him, so that we can be disappointed like when that awesome golden retriever didn't win two years ago.

OMG New Red Panda At The Zoo!
The Philadelphia Zoo has
a new super cute red panda, who shows up after the ugly animals at the start of this video.
The new panda is a two-year old female and has been brought in as a companion for the zoo's 16-year-old. But she's too young to mate and he's too old, so the relationship will be platonic. Maybe they'll cuddle a bit, though.
In related news, I care about puppydogs.

OMG BAT DOG PUPPIES !!!
Chase, the adorable bat dog for the minor league Trenton Thunder (with Hideki Matsui at right) is now going to be a father. The water-bringing, bat-retrieving dog has been matched up with a dog from from
Cynazar Golden Retrievers. A litter is expected at the end of the month.
Wacky promotions have been a part of baseball ever since men like Bill Veeck realized the teams play like 450 games a season and there are like 30 leagues and so the teams need to send a dwarf to the plate every once in a while. Chase is just another part of that tradition of hilarity, along with 10-Cent Beer Night, the 1994 players' strike and the opening day starting lineup of the 1997 Philadelphia Phillies.
You can actually contact the breeder if you are interested in one of the puppies. Be sure to ask if they have models that can retrieve other sporting equipment. (Jock straps?)
The Thunder's press release is here. There's video of Chase picking up the bat here.

Dog With Four Legs Stolen By 'Thugs'
Thugs steal puppy from woman, reads the headline, for that is what happened.
Yes, in Souderton, Bucks County, a woman had the schnoodle (one of those hybrid mutts) she'd gotten just 12 hours earlier taken by two men. "Nice-looking puppy," the one man said "snidely," the paper reported, before snatching it from the 62-year-old woman.
And in case you happen to see a dog you think is the kidnapee (not pictured above, but aww):
Authorities are still determining what motivated the men to steal the dog, which is recognized for its loyalty, intellect and love of a game of fetch.
So, you know, a dog that likes to play fetch. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

Cute Doggies To Invade Pennsylvania In Nov.
I've seen media hordes around star athletes. I've seen media hordes around politicians holding hamburger buns in a reference to a 20-year-old catchphrase. (It was the LOLcat of its day.) I've even seen media hordes crowded around an anonymous guy in a giant shark mascot costume.
Before today, though, I had never stood behind a media horde attempting to photograph a group of dogs. Yes, that's right, the above photo of photographers laying on the ground is because they're taking photos of doggies who are drinking from martini glasses. (They're drinking water.)
Today was a press conference for the National Dog Show, which is returning to the Pennsylvania Convention Center from November 15-18. I learned a bunch of facts about dogs and the dog show and the Philadelphia Kennel Club -- did you know it predates the American Kennel Club? -- today, but mainly I just looked at the doggies and went, "Aww."

Yet Another Excuse To Run Cuteness
The tiger cubs at the zoo are growing up. Gawwwww. Look, they're learning to eat and play and get weighed!
Koosaka, Changbai, and Terney are about four months old now and averaging about 40 pounds each. They are eating their collective 15 pounds of red meat a day, playing, and scampering around their exhibit at the Zoo's Big Cat Falls. Now, it's time to train the cubs so the Zoo's keepers can take care of them properly. Permanent keeper Tara Brody: "They're starting to learn some basic behaviors that will help us when they're bigger to take care of them, like sit and lay down, get on scales. We're going to have to vaccinate them pretty soon."
Just too, too cute.

Police Cat Missed By Civilians, Police
Someone has stolen a helpful police cat, one that makes sure the officers in the South Street mini-station can
protect the Whole Foods next door. This is important, people!
The cat who is the mascot for the South Street Mini Station was taken from outside the station on Wed. May 16th around 11pm. "Cuffs" is missed by many, police and his many civilian visitors he received at the station. We were wondering if you could perhaps post a story with his picture and see if the person that took him from outside the station thought he was a stray, he might return him. He keeps taking his collar off so he did not have it on that night.
If any questions please contact either
Lt. Gerry McShea or Sgt Paul Sprigg
South Street Mini Station
905 South Street
215-922-6706
Return the cat. Without police protecting near that Whole Foods, who knows what organic food thefts could take place.

Philadelphia Will Do Goes To The Dogs
As you may know, I have a thing for puppies. This extends to dogs as well, and so the Westminster Kennel Club dog show is always a favorite of mine. Cute dogs, Bill Cosby, predictions of doom and so forth.
I wasn't able to attend Westminster due to laziness issues, but Philadelphia Will Do Bucks County correspondent Christina Palsky was there, and filed the excellent report after the jump.

Cuteness Alert: Baby Seal In Delaware!
You all remember last year when Helís the Whale cavorted in the Delaware River over the summer and thousands of people ran out to places like Bristol to try to watch it. Right. Well now the Delaware has a new visitor -- one who's much cuter than a big mean ol' whale.
The Delaware River has a baby seal.
It's actually a baby grey seal, which is its own species of seal, Halichoerus grypus. Scientists (or whatever) say that the seal is just looking for some fish to chow down on and will be here for a little longer.
Unfortunately, this whale isn't white and fluffy anymore. Still, here's an example of a grey seal pup:
Aww. Who's a good seal? C'mere boy! Actually, don't, since I could get fined for messing with you. But, hey, still cute!

Yay! Puma kittens!
When I heard there were baby pumas (aka cougars) at the Philadelphia Zoo, I thought, "Hot damn! I'll write an oh-so-clever lead about how there finally actually are cougars in Philadelphia!"
Then the Inquirer wrote the same thing today. Blast.
The Zoo hasn't had pumas since the mid-90s, and acquired the three cubs after their mother was shot in a state-sanctioned puma hunt in South Dakota. They will be part of the zoo's new Big Cat Falls exhibit, which will open in may.
And, aww, aren't they cute? They're little Nittany Lions! Now all the zoo needs to do is get some puppies and they'll be set.
