No They're/Their Mixup Goes Unpunished

Okay, I usually don't care about typos -- Lord knows I make enough of 'em -- but making the their/there/they're mistake? For shame, Philly.com.

Also, Ramsay gets rid of the narcotics strike force and diesel is $4.20 a gallon. Coincidence? I think not.

Thanks, Brad!

NBC 420

111507fourtwenty.jpg
We all know the local news attempts to scare its viewers in order to keep them watching. Usually, this is accomplished by reports about things that are endangering your children. And the most dangerous time, according to NBC 10's Tim Furlong, is 4:20.

Four twenty, as you probably know, is slag for a time to smoke weed. Most likely, it comes from when a group of high school students in California would smoke up. (Some people in college said "smoke out"? I don't know.) Somehow, the slang made it into popular culture, and today most people could tell you 4:20 is a marijuana reference. You would probably get in trouble in school for putting a 4:20 patch on your bookbag.

Medical Marijuana Rally On 4/22 (Two Days Better Than 4/20!)

042006legalizeit.jpg Ahh, 420. The day that's the launchpad for a million awful, awful jokes and a million more killed brain cells.

If you don't know, 420 is slang for weed smoking and has sold more lame Spencer's posters than any other number. April 20 is celebrated as an unofficial "Marijuana Day", although the slang originally came from a group of high school kids who used it as a time they'd light up, i.e. 4:20 p.m.

That being said, I'd like to honor my chemically-altered and hungry readers today by publicizing an event taking place on Saturday on the Parkway. PhillyNORML, the local branch of a group for the reformation of marijuana laws, is holding a vigil for victims of the ban on medicinal marijuana on Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Ben Franklin Parkway.

Eleven states have legalized the wacky weed for people whose doctors recommend it, which include people with MS, cancer and AIDS. Even though those states have legalized it, the federal government reserves the right to prosecute smokers. (Fun fact: There once was an official government medical marijuana program, and there's about seven smokers left grandfathered in. It's true!)

I know there's some junk science about marijuana out there and not everything is conclusive -- which is partially the government's fault, ahem -- but the Philadelphia Will Do Stanceā„¢ is this: If you're unlucky enough to have AIDS, MS, cancer, etc., you should be allowed to light up.

Full release after the jump.
