Sen. Obama, Are You The Devil?

041708americanflag.jpg
Apparently I was vomiting when this question was asked so I didn't get to make fun of it. Yes, one "Nash McCabe" from Latrobe, Pa., asked the big question everyone was hoping would be asked: "Sen. Obama, I want to know if you believe in the American flag?"

No, really. That was the question. I still sort of think George Stegosaurus' question of "Is Rev. Wright as patriotic as you?" was more ridiculous, but only by a little. After asking the question, McCabe continued: "I am not questioning your patriotism, but all our servicemen, policemen and EMS wear the flag. I want to know why you don't." Charlie Gibson then says, "It's all over the Internet," as if he were asking Obama a question about LOLcats.

Video after the jump. Oh, and Latrobe? I'm glad you lost your Rolling Rock brewery, you flag-lovers.

Obama wears American flag underwear. You just can't see it.

Posted by: friendlynerd at April 17, 2008 10:27 AM

since when is it a fucking requirement to wear a flag pin on your lapel.

i fucking hate people.

Posted by: mikedee at April 17, 2008 10:36 AM

I believe in the existence of American flag, but that is about it.

Posted by: A. V. at April 17, 2008 11:17 AM

she's quoted elsewhere as saying, 'how can i vote for someone that doesn't wear the flag pin'?. she went on to say that she keeps looking for it everytime she sees him on tv. this woman is not only bitter, she's jobless. i bet she's been screwed over by the past two administrations and she has stupid things like this to 'cling' to.....Obama says he gives more credit to the american voter, but with questions like these - i fail to see his optimism in voters..

The video must be low quality, I can't seem to make out Nash's flag pin.

I use an American flag as a cum rag.

Posted by: EastChestnut at April 17, 2008 06:32 PM

The question is, are you the devil. Wearing the American flag does not make a person american, you racist pig?

Actually the woman mangled the question. She never asked about a lapel pin rather she stated that servicemen, policemen and EMS all wear the US flag. I was active Army and then active Air Force. I wore a uniform with an American flag attached to my sleeve. It was not a pin nor did I wear a flag on my dress uniform. All the above people wear flags as patches and not pins. With all of that said the woman is an idiot and needs to get a life. She does not have enough brain cells to ask a direct question as to a lapel pin and compares a suit to a uniform. She will be voting for McCain as Hillery does not wear a flag pin so her question would tend to show her as a Republican but again she insults all of us who have served in the military if all she sees are lapel pins rather then the actions of those of us who served.

Posted by: Philip Roberts at April 17, 2008 10:52 PM

The question is:
Are we going to let these media people ( please remember that George Stephanopolus worked for the Clintons ...and it is clear he still does)
pick a President for us by the use of absolute cheap distractions like these??

If a flag pin is so important, why was Hillary not asked?
Because it is NOT important.
And this is NOT about patriotism.
It is a trick.

They are AFRAID of Obama...afraid that he really will clean up this culture of corruption.

If Hillary really wanted to make changes, why would she praise McCain?
She is part of the same, corrupt , old-boys ( and girls) network.

Please people...see beyond the smoke and mirrors.

NO ONE asks about Bill Clinton's recent multi-million $ questionable deals with Arab Sheiks...this money goes into the Clintons joint bank account ( she has not released this years tax returns..nor has MCain).

She is the exact kind of people Barack mentioned who cling to guns & religion & LAPEL PINS in times of hardship.
Look, she is 52 & unemployed. She does not care about real issues. What she cares about is lapel pins. I am sure she is BITTER.
She deserves to be unemployed.

That Nash McCabe is no woman. That's a man baby!

Posted by: Austin at April 18, 2008 06:05 AM

She is so hot.

Posted by: Jimmy Crackcorn at April 18, 2008 08:36 AM

Another useless piece of white trash

Posted by: Karyn at April 18, 2008 08:44 AM

Turns out McCabe has never been an Obama supporter. She was quoted in the NY Times several weeks ago complaining about the flag pin.

That they chose her to ask this question shows more ABC bias.
The guy who asked Clinton the question about Bosnia had originally been an Obama supporter

Posted by: Sally at April 18, 2008 08:53 AM

Hillary was not wearing a flag pin. Who gives a flip? But why wasn't she asked the question as well?

Posted by: heather at April 18, 2008 09:31 AM

John Prine says it best.

Your flag decal won't get you in to heaven anymore.
Their already overcrowded from your dirty little war.

Did anyone catch that bit about Ayers ostensibly making outrageous comments about bombs on the day of the WTC attack? Stephanopoulos mentioned this and Clinton took off with it.

Turns out Ayers was discussing his memoirs before the attack and his remarks appeared in the 9/11/01 edition of the paper. The New York Times did a fact-check on statements made during the debate (http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/us/AP-Obama-Radical-Fact-Check.html?scp=3&sq=ayers&st=nyt).

Did Stephanopoulos and Clinton mistakenly assume the comments were made on 9/11? Wouldn't they have known that anything that appeared in the paper on 9/11 would have been written on 9/10 or earlier?

A fascinating scenario appears in "The Weather Underground 'Theme'" (http://www.consortiumnews.com/2008/041708.html).

Nash McCabe had every right to ask this question to Senator Obama. It was a question of his patriotism.. What about when they say the pledge or the national anthem? Ever see him with his hand on his heart like all americans do.... Again that is his choice.... But it is freedom of speech and she has every right to ask him about it... Like some of the other questions others ask.. So why is everyone getting bent out of shape? It's a question. Maybe is has some merit thats why people are getting mad about it!

Posted by: toni at April 18, 2008 10:44 PM

Hillary doesn't wear a lapel pin either. Guess McCabe can't vote for her either. Seriously people who choose candidates for reasons like this should be exiled to an island far far away. Or we should have an IQ test to vote...

Posted by: MaryJillian at April 18, 2008 11:54 PM

Maybe thats not the only reason why she might not vote for Obama??? Might be one of them....but again that is her choice. People take alot of things out of context online, when it could mean something else. The ones that bash people and call them trash probably don't even vote. And never wish hard times on anyone, it might come back at you and bite you in the butt.

This is EXACTLY a prime example of what Obama was talking about when he made his 'bitter' statements. This woman and her husband are in dire financial straits, her husband is an injured out-of-work coal miner, and they've racked up huge medical bills because of inadequate health insurance. So, what is most on her mind when she gets thrust onto the national stage? A flag lapel pin.

It's not her fault and Obama said so. She feels no control over her economic situation, so she's focusing (i.e. "clinging") to something that matters to her ... the wedge issue of the flag. Other people in similar circumstances will focus (I wish Obama had used that word) ... will focus on gun rights, prayer in school, abortion, immigration issues, etc.

Will Bunch said it best, "Obama's been under fire for the last week for suggesting that Rust Belt voters -- facing a swirl of feelings about the economy and "people who don't look like them" -- are wooed by wedge issues.

ABC's contribution to that discussion: Wooing voters with wedge issues.

Sad."

I'm telling you that's a man baby!

Posted by: Austin at April 19, 2008 12:00 PM

Someone should tell this woman that John McCain doesn't wear a flag pin.

As a matter of fact, almost NONE of the candidates, Dem or GOP, wore lapel pins. Rudy Giulliani was the exception.

Good Lord, what is wrong with ABC for running this claptrap?

Posted by: zuzu at April 19, 2008 01:31 PM

You know nothing about her living and health situation.. eveidently you must know it all. How do you know what medical coverage she has or doesn't have or that he IS an injured outof work coal miner, what if he is...Has nothing to do with the question she asked... WHy not slam people for asking other as you some put it "stupid" questions.. Id he doesn't have a problem then answer the question she asked. And guess what she isn't the only one that asks that question, but she was the only one brave enough to answer. NOW everyone is making something out of a question.. Remember freedom of speech, dont judge unless you want to be judged.

Posted by: toni at April 19, 2008 06:31 PM

The funniest line in her question was "I'm not questioning your patriotism." Really??? Then what does she MEAN by "Do you believe in the flag?" Is she asking if he believes that the American flag exists?
That thing about mixing up uniforms and civilian clothes was pretty weird too. It sounds like she thinks all the politicians should be in uniforms like the Nazis were, in their brown shirts with their swastika pins.

For people who think Obama will not say the Pledge, or won't put his hand on his heart for it etc. - you are mistaken, maybe you got one of the many false e-mails that are going around or saw the same lies cut and pasted on a website. Check out snopes.com for their investigation: they have links to videos of former occasions where he is leading the Pledge in the Senate; they go into the flag pin thing too. He didn't say he would not ever wear a flag pin (and he did put one on recently when a disabled vet gave it to him); he said started wearing one after 9/11 but eventually it seemed it was being used as a substitute for real patriotism. My grandfather who is a veteran felt the same way, he said he did not want to be seen as blindly supporting everything Bush did, which he felt was what wearing the flag was being seen as. We didn't use to insist our politicians wear symbols. and nobody talks about McCain not wearing one. Real patriotism is in more serious actions than putting on some pin made in China.
