As a product of the Catholic school system (which has been a big stickler for abstinence only education for awhile now), I can testify that it doesn't work. I am a slut.

Oddly enough, at my Catholic high school, they taught us all about condoms and other forms of contraception.

No demonstrations, obviously, but in my sophomore year Sex & Dating class (a religion class taught by a priest, natch) they told us all about contraceptives, we were tested on them and I'm pretty sure they didn't even lie about the effectiveness of them. Now, they told us we couldn't use any of these except the rhythm method and only in marriage, but I thought it was actually responsible.

In that class, we also watched a video where mimes told (or showed, I guess) us not to hate gay people.

OK to be fair I was tested on contraceptives too, but told of their evils and shown slides of STDs. Those horrifying images stick with me to this day.

I figure why learn about contraceptives if you're told you'll go to hell for using them?

I'm a product of public schools, and your Catholic sex-ed classes sound exactly like mine. "These are contraceptives, this is how you use them, but you should wait until marriage to have sex or you'll get pregnant and die, and OH MY GOD LOOK AT THESE HORRIBLE STD'S AREN'T THEY DISGUSTING!!!!"

Then we watched a video of a woman giving birth and I threw up in a trash can.

I don't remember seeing slides of STDs, but maybe I've just blocked it out of my head.

Mike, I went to public school and that's basically what they did too.

in addition to my mother giving me "the talk" infront of my dorm room at college when she said "no sex is safe sex" and then left.

I was very well rounded.

I blew my sex-ed teacher.

In a rare showing of progressiveness, my Catholic junior-year sex-ed teacher told us all to go up to the chalkboard and write every slang term for genitals we know of. This was the first day of class so we weren't really sure what to think of it. Was it a trap? We all just sat there.

After a minute my friend Sally marched up to the board and wrote TWAT really big. That opened the floodgates.

Why doesn't he just flush the money down the toilet? It would do less damage.

Yeah, so abstinence education works, huh? Let me relate this little anecdote. I attended a very small, very christian, very conservative high school 10 years ago. The only sex ed we were given was DON'T. Don't until you're married. Don't until you want to have kids after you're married. In fact, just DON'T ever or God will punish you. Seriously, the speech took less than 5 minutes. That's all we got. Well, out of my class of 36, 8 girls were either pregnant or had kids, some of them multiple kids, by graduation. At least 3 guys had fathered one or two themselves. Yup, abstinence education works GREAT!

If so that same video was burnt into my mind for many years....oddly enough it was a Catholic school girl that got me over that sight!!

It is natural for humans to want to procreate. Therefor telling humans to not have sex is inhuman. Oh the inhumanity!

But I know the video you're talking about - I think it's called "The Miracle of Life." I think the miracle is that the kid didn't get tangled in his mom's gigantic bush or abraded by the sideburns on her legs.

I went to a public school, through all the boring sex-ed classes, then into the military which showed all the same boring things about STD's. I've had plenty of sexual partners, no children to date, and no diseases ever. Abstinence may work, but if you're smart, you can still practice safe sex without contraceptives. Pouring money into this program is not going to solve anything, parents being smarter and teaching their children, instead of passing the buck to someone else, would do a lot more to aiding the growth of society, instead of having all these wannabe thugs and hoodlums running around, dipping their wick into anything that has a pulse, and getting the 15-16yo girls pregnant.

And then you have the whole "Hey, I'm a teacher, and you're a hot schoolgirl/boy, wanna bump ugly?"

I can only assume that means he's traveled the commonwealth checking teenage girls to see if their hymens are still intact. Icky.

I go to a district in rural Michigan that gives sex-ed in 9th grade and doesn't teach about birth control at all, just abstinence. Last month there were 26 known students pregnant out of around 750 students in the high school, and some students pregnant in the district as young as 11 years old.

funny how these weirdoes never twig that abstinence is unnatural. not that i have any problem with unnatural (i love cars and vaccinations) but they bang on about what's sexually 'natural' all the time.
well, guess what? teen pregnancy and genital warts are natural, death in childbirth is natural, your first ever period is nature's way of saying you can be a mommy now, so GO PERVERTS!!!
bring on that selfish, godless intervention in the processes of nature! i can't get enough of it.

There has been a lot more valid evidence that abstinence only education does not work. Jesus! v.v I wonder if this guy has read the article about how premarital sex decreases one's chances of becoming a deliquent.

Everything Specter does only reminds me how much better a Senator Joe Hoeffel would have been.

This is nothing new, in fact this year's earmarks are a big decrease from previous years. If we all voice our opposition instead of letting him quietly pander to the ultra conservative right he might make some changes!
