Rick Santorum Makes Inquirer Debut
![]() |
Rick Santorum's much-anticipated Inquirer column debuted today, and the paper didn't even bother to put his name at the top of the article online. Good start.
After the jump, I dive in to the Santorum.
- Line that could have appeared on this blog: "I see: Bring on a writer who got less than 20 percent of the city vote and about 40 percent of the suburban vote in 2006 to expand readership. Shrewd."
- Actually blaming problems on Hollywood: "It's an unfortunate fact that over the last decades, the institutional left - Hollywood, the mainstream media and academia - have not only become intolerant of dissent from their own orthodoxies, but also often attack anyone who espouses an opposing view." You're either with us or with the terrorists, Senator Santorum!
- Line that could have been penned by Chris Freind, were his column called "The Elephant in the Room" rather than "Freindly Fire": "I call my column 'The Elephant in the Room' for two reasons. First, it reflects the hope that I can give voice to the thousands of people who either read this section of the paper only as a source of enemy intel or don't read it because it is bad for their blood pressure."
- Sentence that just sounds funny: "For example, I have had my share of conservative critics who object to the more activist role for government I favor in dealing with poverty both at home and abroad." (I wanted to find if Rick Santorum had condemned the genocide in Darfur, but I couldn't find anything on Google, even. His "Darfur scorecard" page was blank.)
- Weird boast: "Believe it or not, I was able to pass more than 200 pieces of legislation that I authored."
To counter Rick Santorum's introduction column, the Daily News' Will Bunch introduces a column of his own, dedicated to rebutting Rick Santorum's column. An excerpt: "Not me. I say, 'Bring it on!'" He also links to the Wikipedia entry for crowdsourcing.
I got a bit distracted by Attytood's commenters, who are great. The comments on PWD are inane and rarely topical, but they are nowhere near as funny as ones like this: "Oh my....you can feel bunch's anger and jealousy just oozing through the monitor. Santorum gets a 'coveted op-ed platform', while ivy-educated, serious journalist, 'this is my job' bunch is left blogging to a tiny group of people who mostly criticize his wrinkled wardrobe, receding hairline, and affiliation with the tin foil helmet crowd at daily KooKs."

Does the fact that I read the line, "believe it or not, I was able to pass more than 200 pieces of legislation that I authored" and thought, "wow, that must've been painful" make me inane?
