Dead Horses Found Beaten In North Philly

Barbaro
Investigators got a tip about unsanitary conditions for horses in a North Philly stable. And it turns out well, the tip was dead on:

Officials from the SPCA said they received and anonymous call reporting the nearly block of stables housing dozens of horses, were rundown. The SPCA along with the Department of License's and Inspections responded to the scene and found mountains of manure, malnourished horses and a partially buried carcass.

The article said charges are pending as they investigate, but I can only assume that has to be a typo. These are horses, people! Whoever leaves them in conditions like that ought to get a parade down Broad Street. Hell, let me be the marshall, I can ride Zombie Barbaro all the way to the Navy Yard!

Update: I get phone calls about my shitty joke, too!

"The Barbaro people are circling the wagons as we speak. They will shut you DOWN, DMac." Took a little longer than I expected.

Total garbage. I'm also one of the Barbaro people. Is this what the people of your fine city read about. My bad, I forgot they can't read.

Posted by: Cal at November 15, 2007 02:01 PM

Now, the real problem I have with this commentary is that its purpose is obscure. There is no irony, clever wordplay, wry observation, intellectual challenge. It is simply a stupid, finger up your nose, pimply faced, juvenile equivalent of a fart joke. Lame to the max.

Now, of course, you may be a true sociopath that truly enjoys the suffering of innocent creatures. In that case, I would urge your corporate bosses to steer as clear away from you as possible, since you may escallate to the physical assault of human beings who have the ability, unlike the horses, to sue their butts off.

Posted by: jacalynt at November 15, 2007 02:04 PM

And your point in going out of your way to p*** off horsepeople, all horsepeople and not merely the FOBs you disdain, is??? SAYP

Posted by: FIF at November 15, 2007 02:06 PM

Is there some point to this piece, other than to prove the writer is an ignorant psychopath? The sponsors of this site should be ashamed for allowing this drivel to be published.

How does PW have this air bandit as their editor? Even the most liberal strung out wackjobs don't find joy in animals being abused and killed. I wrote to 3 sponsors so far. Dmac is a lonely crusty old deadbeat loser. Let's make sure we add the adjective "unemployable" to that.

Odd that Dmac feels the need to insult all of Philly -- last time I checked, most of the Barbaro connections are in our area. Did that include them and does that make Dmac an apostate?

Posted by: love barbaro at November 15, 2007 03:10 PM

Mr. McQuade,

I cordially invite you to visit our horse rescue organization located in Bel Air, Maryland. As a writer, I assume that you know education is the key to your success. Please come and educate yourself, meet the innocent creatures here that have all suffered at the hands of humans, see those who were starved almost beyond help, our ex-race horses who are successfully transitioning into life off of the track and the kind & knowledgable people who have rehabilitated these horses.

When we're done here, I will gladly take you to meet my friends Alyssa & Linda who do equine assisted psychotherapy. There you will meet people with autism, physical disabilities, abuse issues, PTSD and numerous other issues that have responded to nothing except for the kind horses that are a major part of their therapy.

You will also meet my husband, and Iraqi war veteran who will gladly admit that the horses are his best therapy when dealing with post war trauma. We can also put you in touch with one of our volunteers who is currently serving in Afghanistan who will tell you that the first thing he wants to do when he returns is see the horses.

Mr. McQuade, you're entitled to your opinions just as we all are, but an informed decision would benefit you and your future writings greatly.

We're not far from Philly - please, come visit. Spend a little time with the horses and the children they help. I guarantee you'll leave here with a very different view on horses, the people who help them and the people they help.

Sincerely,

Actually, the news article was largely incorrect. Yup, a dead horse was found, but belonged to a different person that the other horses shown. The SPCA showed up again the next day to inspect, and found nothing wrong - not too surprising since all the horses are well fed, cared for, and "roaming" (one of horses' favorite activities) in mud, not manure.

Posted by: Marcia at November 15, 2007 05:26 PM

Michelle Shuman aka dmac,
The article is accurate. They have different owners because people are boarding them there. The horses are in SPCA custody. Animals living tied up in 2 feet of fecal matter is something the SPCA has an issue with so don't go misquoting people when you have NO CLUE what you are talking about. Horses also need to graze. They can't do that in mud dumby.

You dont have to be a Freud or an Einstein to know that it is not just a matter of a "simple" joke,....it is a HARMFUL (attempt) at a joke.....you're total lack of COMPASSION for the suffering OR DEATH of ANY living thing is DEPLORABLE - you are setting a BAD example to the rest of the world to be broadcasting that type of CALLOUS attitude over the air waves. There are morons out there that will think your joke was funny,.....for they are compassionless idiots also. They would have to be to think you're 'joke" was funny. What kind of example are you setting for our youth? You really should be ashamed of yourself, but of course, you need a working, HEALTHY BRAIN to feel that.

Dmac:

I pray you never have to suffer the loss of a loved one - whether human or animal. You and your cronies may think this is all fun and games, but until you've seen a horse in pain, until you look in their eyes as they beg you to help them humanely die, when you pray and hold them as they DO die...don't even THINK about mocking Barbaro or any of the FOB's. I just have to thank you for educating us on being such a sad human being who is so empty inside that all you can do is mock a group of people who have accomplished more for horse rescue in 18 months than you can ever hope to achieve in your very short and immature lifetime.

Circle the wagons? You haven't begun to see what the FOB's can do.

It always amazes me the people who retain employment in the journalism profession. What a moron. I can't believe you have a job. Hopefully it dose not pay much and you drive around in a crappy car. I can't imagine you have any family that gives a damn after all, a man without compassion usually is to selfish to have any loving relationship, human or otherwise. My guess is you'll be spending the holidays alone.

Posted by: Diane Stevenson at November 15, 2007 10:57 PM

Wow,
I hope that someday the "author" and I use the term very loosely, has to rely on someone to take care of him. That maybe some painful, unforgiving and degrading condition has this person unable to bathe, speak, or urinate without help. I hope that they someday feel the fear and pain that an abused animal feels and the confusion they go through when they are thirsty and just want a drink of water or a few peices of hay to fill their stomachs.
How any human could post the sick things on here that you people have is beyond me.
The "writer" is a desperate and untalented lackey who is obviously trying to make up for his absence of writing skills by resorting to less than tabloid trash then enlists his few loser friends to back up his elementary school attempt at journalism and humor.
The problem with wannabes is that they never realize how replaceable they are. They never realize who knows who and who actually pays their salaries. I don't care if you are an FOB or not MOST people have class, common sense, compassion and taste and would find this sickening. This irrational rant is not the feelings of the intelligent people in Pa., or anyone who reads this. I am sure it is not the feelings of the PW or any of it's advertisers....who have to answer to their own bosses themselves.
It is taking issues like this lightly that allows the abuse to continue. Please take a moment to e-mail, fax and call the advertisers who keep this papers bills paid, explain to them that there are a million things that make people laugh, that we can take lightly, animal abuse is not one of them. If the best contribution that this writer has is to ridicule a compassionate group whose only mission is to save lives and help horses (FOB) or to find humor in suffering and pain, he is replaceable. I am sure many of the advertisers and their families are animal lovers, possibly even humane societies or such.
Just make your voices heard, it will work, a vast majority of people do not condone animal abuse the way this person does and the very small minority that support him don't matter anyway. A bunch of losers bonding together because they have nothing else. Typical junior high crap.

I find it amazing how an insensitive, ignorant and callous lout can actually work as an editor of a newspaper. The remarks of Mr.McQuade are so outrageous, one can only hope that he gets some counseling on some broader personality disorders he has. I feel a bit sad for someone like him who does not see the precious and sacred nature of all life and our duty to protect all creatures in the name of humanity. If Mr. McQuade finds the plight of horses comical, I would bet that he has little compassion for his fellow human beings.

Posted by: Lorraine Brown at November 16, 2007 08:33 AM

Posted by: chrissmari at November 16, 2007 09:30 AM

I think this is reaching farther than you think & includes more than teary-eyed women you are sickening for even concidering this topic as some thing to ridicule most animal abusers also have a history of abuse to humans do you also condone that?

Posted by: Mose in Alabama at November 16, 2007 11:45 AM

We sure have a lot of really creepy people in our country - fire him and get an educated person in there who knows how to write.

Posted by: Teri Shaffer at November 16, 2007 04:32 PM

Doesn't anyone work anymore or is the horse lobby so big they can employ all these FOB's. There are thousands of people dying in this country and all over the world and people decide to praise a dead horse who won a single triple crown race. One person at a small urban weekly actually has an opinion and is able to put his priorities in order and half the country freaks out. I don't want any animal to suffer or die, but to ask someone to get fired because they feel praising a horse who did nothing but run in a circle and break his leg is stupid is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Good luck praying to Barbaro I'm sure he'll nay to all your prayers.

Posted by: Jared at November 16, 2007 06:07 PM

Calling the author 'clever' is a stretch. It's not clever, it's not funny, it's just dumb. Does this person get paid for writing this drivel?

Posted by: Jeramy at November 16, 2007 06:19 PM

Are you mentally ill and eat your own crap? Who in their right mind would have such hatred for Barbaro and joy at suffering horses? Are you that miserable and filled with self- hatred that you have to take out your pain of not measuring up on suffering horses? Is this how you get back at the world because they think you are a looser? Go back to eating your "lunch" because crap is all that comes in and out of your mouth.

BUC, I have heard that EXACT, insipid tired special Olympics statement that you wrote zillions of times on the web. It seems like you couldn't come up with anything original just like MacQuade. Only a disgusting and talentless person like you two tries to trample on the innocent such as people with disabilities and suffering animals and then comes up with uncreative statements. You're weak!!!

I'm not an FOB, OK?? for those who don't seem to have a life decent enough to bitch about FOB's.. be at rest. I am not one. I'm just a regular tax-paying, law-abiding citizen who happened upon this unfortunate piece of writing.

The guy who wrote the "article", Mc-something - he cracks me up - he thinks he's cool by posting an update saying "I get phone calls about my shitty joke, too!" Wow, you're so comical, bud, and awfully strong and fearless to mock yourself! You should though, but for real! You're right, your comment is damn shitty and when did it become a joke? When they called your boss? You get enough of these calls and the wrong persons to make them and you're out of a job. Have you nothing of merit to write about or did they sequester you to shitty nonsense because your talent is not something to write home about? Well, whatever the case might be I don't care about what your ineptitudes. Just don't even open your mouth talking about animal suffering like that. You have no idea what you speak of. NONE! God, I can't believe thay allow you to print.. yuck

Posted by: ValD at November 21, 2007 11:00 AM

Wow...
This is what is passing as humor these days?

I find it hard to believe you are working at a newspaper blog.

You are free to feel whatever you want about horses or animals. But your statement, joke or not, was in bad taste, shocking and will offend an entire segment of the population.

"Zombie Barbaro" is the comment that clearly crosses the line. Tell you what, little man, how about any one of the millions of men that love horses and were taken back by your poor attempt at humor, ride you down the street in that same parade?

Animal abuse is a serious matter, people who revel in it or think that it is a joke typically are textbook sociopaths.

But, this is still (supposedly) a free country so I do not think anyone should lose a job over something they said.

That being said, I bet your idea of having a good time is running over a cat or kicking a dog, or cow tipping. Have you ever tried bull tipping? I suggest you try that, and have a good time....
