Comic Book Character, Statue Rally For Ron Paul
You may have wondered what, exactly, the eclectic collection of people cheering for an old doctor were doing on Saturday afternoon outside Independence Hall? Well, silly, it's the Ron Paul Revolution! Or, rather, the Ron Paul RLOVEution or something; I dunno, it was on their signs. Maybe Ron Paul is the hippy candidate. He is for ending the War on Drugs.
Ron Paul is, as you may know, for ending pretty much everything, including the Dept. of Education, UNICEF and the Free Puppies For Sick Children program. He also voted against, I 'unno, Rosa Parks or someone like that getting some Congressional medal, because he votes against all of those frivolous things. Oh, he's also the only Republican candidate smart enough to be against the Iraq War.
Paul also wants to change our currency to the gold standard or something (eh, not quite), which means this is about the closest we've gotten to the historic election of 1896, where William McKinley defeated William Jennings Bryan in the election you never quite understood when you learned it in grade school. Oh! Free Silver! Cross of Gold speech! This is easy to get in 8th grade. (Oh, come on. Being able to go to a bank and deposit whatever and get coins? Guh-wha?)
So that's Ron Paul, I guess. But who were his supporters? Right: Online, they're a band of angry commenters who travel from blog to blog, angrily telling you to support Ron Paul. In person, though? Mainly these people:
![]() |
So, uhh, the Statue of Liberty and the V for Vendetta guy support Ron Paul. Oh, no wonder he's so popular!
Update: Be sure to read the comments. So far, this is my favorite: "His supporters are real folks that you can't persuade anymore, much to your dismay, you don't matter any longer. We can take care of our own news now, thanks anyway." I look forward to the first edition of the Ron Paul Press!

Wow, what a smear article. If you're to lazy to find out why Ron Paul is so popular (because of his political philosophy!) than maybe you shouldn't write an article about the "Ron Paul Revolution".

i predict that, as election season really gets underway here, if you can keep this up you could end up with more crazy comments from ron paul nutsos than you did from the friends of barbaro. it might take a little while to get rolling, but just watch -- you can tell from the tone of the posts above that the groundswell of crazy is starting to grow.

Wake Up! I have never voted because I refused to vote for the lessor of two evils or someone who does not deserve my vote. I cannot wait to get to the polls to vote for this guy. Well worth the wait. GO RON GO.

I have only heard a little about Ron Paul. But anyone who could force a talentless hack like this to attempt an article must be worth checking out.
I have read real journalist's reports of 4,000 plus at the Philly rally. Pretending two people in costume represented the majority, as the rest of this, uh, piece did demonstrates a silly attempt at smear.
Of course, it's not just this moron, the smear campaign is obvious. Anyone worth a smear from this business-as-usual supporting media is worth checking out. From what I've learned myself, Ron Paul is a very honest and principled man. Certainly more so than the warmongering liars surrounding him in the GOP.
Posted by: Pete Simmond at November 12, 2007 10:44 AM
Awe yes, the sound of defeat lol.
The liberal/democrats are pissed at Ron Paul for stealing democrats away from the party and the republicans are pissed because he's for ending the war and that will go against everything they've been brainwashed to believe over the last 6 years. My only suggestion to you people that fall in this category is to take a shit or get off the pot!
Posted by: Rich at November 12, 2007 10:45 AM
There was 4000 ppl there, and they took shots of the ONLY two ppl in costume. (besides the Revolutionaries in their 18th century attire)
No good Republican can vote for Romney, Giuliani, McCain... we made a mistake with Bush..
Let us fix it all with Ron Paul.

Yes, there were over three thousand people there. But as per this article's excellent analysis, it's clear that all of them were dressed up in crazy costumes.

You know, Ron Paul supporters are given all kinds of names by the Old Press such as "the Paulites," or "libertarians," or "Paulistinians," or even "web savvy organisers," but I have a little nickname for Paul's supporters I came up with last night... oh, what was it again...uhhh...oh yeah, "the American voters"! Ha-HA!
Posted by: TheWhatNow? at November 12, 2007 10:56 AM
I'm sorry that you have such a cynical opinion about Ron Paul. His professional and political career have been consistent and principled, so I think it's rather disrespectful to use such a mocking tone when writing about him.
I think that we will be very much surprised by the turnout for Ron Paul in the primary elections. The major polling organizations' "likely voter" sampling methods are quickly becoming obsolete as the mid-tiered candidates' unrealistically low poll numbers indicate. I doubt that it's due as much to sinister bias as to the rapid changes in information and communication technologies that are outpacing the election cycle period. Regardless, Dr. Paul's campaign seems to be building up a formidable head of steam.
Even though many who are considering support of Ron Paul's platform take issue with one or more of his stated positions, the overriding appeal of a Paul presidency is that it will a) send a powerful signal to both of the major parties that we seriously want a leaner, more constitutional federal government, b) create a more realistic check and balance between the presidency and Congress, and c) encourage young people who aspire to politics to want to follow Paul's very principled, incorruptible governing philosophy.

Just wanted to make a quick comment about the Rosa Parks issue.
Ron Paul did vote against it. But not because he doesn't believe Rosa Parks deserves to be honored. He just doesn't support using tax payer money to do it.
During the house debate Ron Paul actually went to individual members of congress trying to get them to donate money. Not surprisingly, they weren't willing to give their own money to honor her.

Using www.google.com/trends one can see that there is a gigantic disparity between search volume and news reference volume for Ron Paul in relation to the other candidates. The larger this disparity, the more profit that can be made from advertisement where Dr Paul's name appears in the article. The reason: a larger search audiance than any other candidate by far, yet the smallest news reference volume means more search audiance per news reference article. Of course, the easiest way to cash in on this "gold rush" is to write a non-researched negative spam article such as this.

I'm not sold on Dr. Paul completely but I wish people would argue him on the issues rather than attempting to minimalize him.
He proposes returning to the gold standard so that money's value is based on something. Tell me why thats a bad thing?
He proposes ending the Dept. Of Education. He says the responsibility of education lies with the states... Whats wrong with that? States already create most of their own curriculum standards, why do we need the Federal Govt. to impose additional?
I'm not an expert on any of these things so I am very open to anyone who can explain logically why his positions are harmful.

Ron Paul can no longer be labeled a "long shot" candidate. He has clearly has surpassed John McCain and is now a "top tier" candidate. I have created a website to support this statement.

The bloggers (pretend writers) say that Ron Paul is a crazy, wacky, loony, weird, isolationist, racist nutcase and his followers are tin-foil hat conspiracy whack-job cult morons.
Then they complain when his many supporters comment in his defence.
Since his opposition is that dishonest and inept, he may win.

As a staunch republican and Ron Paul supporter, I used to hate these smear articles, now they make me laugh. You seem to be rapidly becoming the minority now.
A vote for Ron Paul is a vote not for someone else. (all of the someone else's suck)
Is anyone else sick of bloggers piggybacking on reputable news organization websites? No fact checkers at all; these people can print anything and because it's a blog, they're not held accountable for anything they print...and the cbs or nbc or cnn logo at the top would lead you to believe it's a factual representation of actual stories, instead of what it really is: an opinion piece whose sole purpose is to slander whoever the article is on.

Hey, author (and everybody), read up on gold standard and fiat currency, inflation, Federal Reserve, credit bubble, do yourself a favor -- do it now, do it fast, and filter as many different sources as you can find. Don't trust your financial adviser, your family, the media -- by and large, everybody's in dreamland. Don't buy wholesale into conspiracy theories, but pay attention to the relationships they discuss.
I work in a Wall Street hedge fund, and I was laughing, too, up to a month ago. But I'm not laughing anymore, that's for sure. I don't yet know if Paul is philosophically right, but I do know that our economy is loaded to the gills with the very problems that he rails against, and the risk of a big collapse has perhaps never been greater.
There's some time left to protect your savings, but if you don't, you're a sitting duck, and nobody is going to give you advance warning if sh*t hits the fan. It's every man for himself when it comes to money.
Do you know what the Fed is doing right now? I'm guessing that they are praying. What are you going to do?

What an absurdly broad and uninformed brush stroke you use when you simply characterize Dr. Paul's supporters as angry bloggers. While I have no problem with people questioning or challenging Dr. Paul's views in a thoughtful and intellegent manner, your article is neither. I find that the "angry" are those who are either too uneducated, and or too lazy, to respond to Dr. Paul's positions with substance.

Ghandi once said, "first they ignore you, and then they attack you, and then you win," or something like that.
i get it, you're scared. ron paul has a chance and you are scared of that. he now has enough money to stop being ignored. i guess that means it's time for the attacks to begin. that's cool...with every attack he just gets more exposure and the chance to win over more americans.
but really, out of the thousands of people who showed up to the rally, you decided to pick two of the most extreme people you could find? it's kind of like when the news crews go to the poor neighborhood and seek out the most unintelligible person to represent that community.
once upon a time, media helped the people. boy how things have changed.

I went to the Ron Paul rally out of curiosity. I've never seen more people smoking in one place since before the city's indoor smoking ban went into effect. When I politely asked them to wait until there weren't so many people around them, they just said stuff like "it's my constitutional right!" and kept right on blowing their smoke wherever they pleased.

Because you and your ilk are scared of original ideas and revolutionaries. You and the rest of BIG MEDIA want more of the same. Did you actually go to the rally? If so, you might have seen the hundreds of veterans there as well.
As for Lady Liberty, would you consider it a good sign or a bad sign that she showed up at a candidate's rally? Would she show up for Giuliani or Clinton? Are you for or against liberty?
The V for Vendetta guy? If you saw the movie, he helped an oppressed nation stand up to a fascist government. Which candidate's rally did you expect him to attend? Maybe Mitt Romney's, to support the candidate who wants to "double Guantanamo"? I didn't think so.
There's a reason Ron Paul supporters are fired up. If you were paying attention, you might figure it out.
Posted by: Craig at November 12, 2007 01:14 PM
What was the point of this? There were a lot of other people dressed in character at the rally. Like the group of people dressed like vegans, the people dressed like college students, and all those people who were "slumming it" by dressing up like poor people! Of course, they were all "dressing up" to deceive people into thinking that Ron Paul might just be that voice in the wilderness that us poor young folk have been looking for. Those...uh....jerks.

How to write a article on Ron Paul.
By Rupert Murdoch
To all my media outlets,
It is important to write an article about Republican candidate Ron Paul once a month to show that we are fair and balanced. Here is the format I would like you to use:
1. Start the article by making him look crazy. Use terms like, "fringe, moonbat, crazy, longshot, and dark-horse"
2. At some point in your article point out his results in the telephone polls that don't call his support base.
3. Next, I know this goes against any journalistic integrity you may have left, but, make a statement that he will not win. I recommnend some form of these statements:
- "he has no chance of winning"
- "his less than power-ball chances"
- "he will not win the nomination"
- "don't bet on him getting one delegate"
4. Finally, spend some time denegrating his supporters. Write that they are all crazy and angry. I know again I am asking you to lie, but that's why I pay you.
Please be creative.

Hmmm, Why would Dr. Paul be the one consenting vote against Rosa Parks getting the Congressional Gold Medal?
He was good friends with the Reagan's, why was he the one vote against them getting the Congressional Gold Medal?
In both instances he took a $100 bill out of his pocket and asked his fellow congressmen and women to due the same to cover the cost of the medal. In both cases Congress went against him and authorized the spending of $30,000.00 taxpayers dollars to mint the medals.
The Constitution does not authorize the spending of taxpayer dollars for these medals. Congressman Paul takes an oath to uphold the Constitution every time he is elected.
It is shameful for you to poke fun at such a principalled man.

Posted by: ALB at November 12, 2007 03:12 PM
It's pretty basic here. The big government, welfare-warfare Democratic and Republican front-runners Rudy, Romney, Hillary, Obama and Edwards PAY people to come to their rallies, cheer and hold signs (the rate is $50). We witnessed this again at the Drexel debates. Ron Paul's supporters came to Philly on their own dime from as far away as Alaska because he is the only Presidential candidate other than Gravel and Kucinich who is honestly committed to an immediate withdrawal from Iraq. Immediate.
The problem is our financial system. Fiat currency inexorably leads to racketeering wars, theft from the poor and middle class via currency inflation to pay for it and loss of civil liberties (tyranny) to keep the sheep in check. It's here and now so figure it out. The choice is clear - a return to freedom, peace and prosperity or the end of American freedom in the very near term (thanks for nothing, Pelosi et al).
Is the writer going to vote for a Democratic neo-con? Is he even a registered voter?

Google (you know the number one website on planet earth) has an engine that will "find" new articles that are created and placed on working web servers. Once it finds one, it places a reference to the page in its own personal database.
Then, if a human searches on a term (such as Ron Paul) the Google engine uses the data base to display a list of hyperlinks to web pages that contain the searched term.
Once a user clicks on a link provide by the Google Search Engine, lo and behold, they are taken to the page!
Upon reading an article, humans may want to interact with the author of said article.
As a web developer, I can assure you that it doesn't take a conspiracy of the Illuminati for biased articles such as this one to be called out for what they are. It merely requires the Internet to work the way it was designed.
Peace.

How dare you speak about my brother Ron that way. His supporters are free-thinking individuals who have had enough of the government's business as usual.
If Ron becomes the President of America, then I will see to it that his very first act of business is putting you in jail for treason. A more efficiently-run, privatized prison, no doubt.

You can smell the flop sweat on the media now. What does it tell you when the more support Paul gathers the more shrill they become denouncing him? If he's not going to win, what are they so scared of?
Check out Ron Paul, and you'll see why they're so scared. And he's bringing his friends.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL (that's pure comedy gold)
We merely point out your incoherence, and invite you to join the grown-ups who are willing to talk about real issues, instead of playing name-calling games. But guess what? The incoherent insist upon playing games, seems it is the only trick they know.
Why would we be angry with you? If not for people like you, the Ron Paul Revolution would be much, much farther away from the goals of freedom and liberty. Instead, you give us the chance to promote the idea that you own your own life, not the criminals in DC.
Angry? Hell no, I hope you write another column, and double the fun!
In other words, thanks for your inadvertent support.

COMIC BOOK EDUCATION BRINGS COMIC BOOK "NEWS"
The writer of this article is disrespectful and inaccurate in stating that the 5,000 people were just cheering for an 'old doctor' in comic book fashion.
Actually they were cheering a 10 term Republican Congressman who is running for president of the good 'ole USA !!
This man served courageously as a flight surgeon for the US Air Force. Might I also add that he recently received $4.2 million in one day, more than any other Republican candidate in the field.
He is also courageous enough to break from the party gate keepers to say what he believes. He is the ONLY Republican with the courage get us out of this mess in Iraq. We are spending trillions of dollars maintaining our empire. We can not afford this anymore--just go buy some gas or try to pay your medical bills, kids college education and tell me inflation isn't going through the roof.
And no, I am not an angry supporter--I actually see more anger of those against Paul. In fact this article seems to be written with angst. Most Paul supporters I meet are highly motivated and educated supporters. We are just tired of being robbed by our government, which was supposed to be limited. We are tired of seeing our brothers and sisters die for a war that was a lie. We are tired of the bought mass media working mostly for big corporations and not for telling the truth.
The attacks on Ron Paul will increase as he's picking up stream. The great spirits supporting
Ron Paul should expect a continuation of this violent opposition(smear pieces, hack news, etc.) Ron Paul stands for freedom, prosperity, individual liberty and the truth--those who take time time to understand what Paul is all about will vote for him over any other candidate--period. In the end, we will prevail because you can't fool everyone all the time, even with hit pieces like the one here. People again yearn for benefits of this unique experiment, created by our founding fathers called a Republic, where individual liberty wins over tyranny. That is what America stands for, a beacon for freedom and truth, not a lying, overtaxing, freedom stealing, war-mongering empire (I could use stronger words but I'm not an angry supporter :-)
I believe in a country called: "America, land of the free, and home of the brave." And so do the other Ron Paul supporters.
GO RON PAUL !!! PRESIDENT 2008 !!!!

If you don't know what "the new twenty" looks like, it has a picture of Benjamin Franklin on it, and people are throwing them around like twenties a few years ago. If your frugal, you'll might even get change back from your hundred.
Yesterday, I was standing in line waiting to pay for my groceries, when the Lady in front of me who didn't have that much, whips out a Franklin to pay. She needed two of them.

I've learned two things about libertarians.
1. They are Republicans who got caught up in smoking weed at some point so they've lost the fire to get insulted by homosexuals and other Republican-classified persona non grata.
2. They make up for their deficient numbers by being about five times as vocal as members of political parties with any chance of winning.
That said, I am a Democrat IN FAVOR of making a bong out of a rifle, so I can relate a bit.

Posted by: friendlynerd at November 13, 2007 03:03 PM
Well, that was some honest journalism for you there. (pause) Not (Borat Not jokes work after all).
If you are going to disagree with a candidate, instead of smear tactic which in the end will make YOU look like a fool and typical person who resort with ad hominem attack, you may just want to check your sources first and make sure your opinion is based on facts and solid evidence, not just some nonsensical blabber you make up as you go along.
1. You fail to mention in the sensationalized Rosa Park vote to make Ron Paul look like some unsympathetic racist, that in fact the vote wasn't against Ms. parks, which he said to CNN was a difficult one for him to vote against since he admire and supports civil obedience in general, AND that he had asked his colleges at Congress to all chip in $100 for the medal, BUT the vote was against forcing tax payers to pay for it. Get your facts straight idiot.
2. On the other issues where you try to paint some sort of monster of Ron Paul you do realize that his stance against Department of Education isn’t necessarily because her personally feels that way, but because he doesn’t think the Government is authorized by the Constitution to support such departments and programs. But that wouldn’t go over well in your humorless attempt to distort whom Ron Paul is.
3. You obviously don’t seem to have a clue about economics. Right now the Private FED is printing money out of thin air BUT charge an interest that can NEVER be paid back to the people. That’s like you loaning yourself $100 and charging yourself $10 in interest. How do you pay back $110 with only $100? You don’t except to go into debt that cannot be paid back.
Wonder what you yourself have in your closet that would make you write such a bias piece of junk. Well, you have to sleep at night. Think about if someone did this to you..

1. Ron Paul has a large number of web surfing supporters. We like to read (gasp!) and blog. We like to comment on stories or blogs that have that functionality. We are very active. THAT IS NOT SPAMMING. Spamming is sending out mass communication without regard to the recipients. A large group of like minded people all doing the same thing is called a MOVEMENT or a REVOLUTION.
2. I think you will find that there are more Paul supporters that actually know where Dr Paul stands on the issues than there are for most of the other candidates. On the contrary, it is his detractors that make the crazy statements based on something they heard on some blog or mainstream media outlet. One lady was going on about how Ron Paul wanted us to have to do all of our financial transactions in gold. Does she have any idea how much gold is an ounce (probably not). You'd be buying your twinkies with specs.
3. I'm sorry if you ran into Paul supporters that are intolerant of others' beliefs. The majority of us are libertarian and believe that everyone should have the freedom to believe what they want. The correct response of a Paul supporter to someone who says he is crazy should be: "That's an interesting statement. I think you may have been misinformed about his platform. I really do encourage you to go to http://www.ronpaul2008.com/issues/ and see where you and he might actually agree."

Dear Author,
1) You neglected to affix your name to your article. I understand you would be ashamed of your unresearched babble.
2) You proved no point, except to confirm that you can write a list of complaints, without the documented reasons Ron Paul gave for his actions. Research, research, research.
3) Who are you going to vote for, and why? Obama refused to put his hand to his heart during the playing of the National Anthem of a country he proposes to lead, and if he will not show respect to our country, how can we show respect to him?
4)Stop writing articles. It's not your forte. Ignorance is. Wise up!

I wasn't even sure who I would vote for. Now I know, simply because people without actual intellect must vote for other candidates. Just because this imbecile is lazy and doesn't do any research... Did you even look up anything about him?! It's people like you that make this world ignorant to other possibilities. Do the world a favor and never write anything EVER again.

"Ron Paul still will not win, and there's nothing his 10 supporters can do about it..."
I haven't counted, but I'm pretty sure that there are more than 10 supporters who've responded to this one poorly-written article. There were 3,000+ of them on Independence Mall on that gray day in November. And however many there are, they've donated $18.4 million since the beginning of October.

Congratulations Inquire, you have proven that you must be so anti-Republican that you can't even see a true AMERICAN in Dr. Ron Paul.
