Sheriff Candidate Names Statue As Running Mate

Just got a press release over the e-transom from the office of Michael Untermeyer, who plans to announce his run for sheriff on Friday at Headhouse Square.

Untermeyer's press release is headlined "A Pledge of Professionalism, Accountability & Integrity" and the first sentence begins "With professionalism, accountability and integrity as the keystone of his vision for the city of Philadelphia." But the real lead is buried in the second paragraph, where he says he's going to have the Rocky statue at his campaign announcement.

He says the city's favorite fictional underdog (in statue form, at least) represents the "indomitable spirit" of the Untermeyer campaign, although he leaves out the part where Rocky was quite domitable at the end of the first movie.

Still, the statue will probably draw a crowd. (Not as much as as a Donald Duck statue would, but a crowd nonetheless.)

His professionalism, accountability, integrity and indomitability (or possibly domitability) aren't the only things his press release teaches us about Untermeyer. We also learn that, like me, he's a fan of exclamation points:

"This is an enormous resource of police manpower that must be pressed into service at this crisis point!"

"The public demands public service that actually serves the public!"

"The citizens demand it and they deserve it!”

Full release after the jump.

A Pledge of Professionalism, Accountability & Integrity

PHILADELPHIA, PA 8/24/06 -- With professionalism, accountability and integrity as the keystone of his vision for the city of Philadelphia, Michael Untermeyer will announce the launch of his campaign for Sheriff in the 2007 election.

A campaign launch event will be held Friday, August 25 - 11:30 AM at the Historic Headhouse, 2nd & Lombard. For the event the "Rocky Statue" will make special appearance to highlight the indomitable spirit that drives the Untermeyer campaign.

With gun violence spiraling out of control in the City of Philadelphia, the citizens demand real substantive action to curb the deadly shooting spree. Community outreach, education, appeals for public support in the prosecution of criminals and video surveillance are part of the answer, agrees former State Assistant Attorney General Michael Untermeyer.

"But what makes a real difference in the neighborhoods where gun violence is most prevalent is high visibility, law enforcement presence on the streets," says Untermeyer who led the Asset Forfeiture & Money Laundering Division of the Attorney General’s Office. His financial investigations led to the prosecution major statewide narcotics trafficking operations.

"Philadelphia employs 213 uniformed, armed, law enforcement trained Sheriff's Deputies. This is an enormous resource of police manpower that must be pressed into service at this crisis point!"

The Sheriff's Department force is under-utilized, according to Untermeyer who believes that the citizens who spend more than $12 million annually on this law enforcement manpower should be getting their money's worth.

"There is ample precedent for the Sheriff's Department becoming more actively involved in policing," explains Untermeyer.

For example, in Allegheny County which includes Pittsburgh, the Sheriff has exercised his authority as the county's chief law enforcement official by taking an essential role in community policing, gun control and public safety.

"The situation in Philadelphia demands that all options be considered and all the resources the citizens pay for are fully engaged and properly deployed," says Untermeyer.

In addition to an enhanced law enforcement role, Untermeyer believes that a variety of management issues in the Sheriff’s Department need attention and improvement.

When elected he will institute systems that address accountability and efficiency to the administration of the department’s $12 million annual budget, and the collection, proper and timely disbursement of millions of dollars more in taxes, fees, expenses collected from Sheriff sales and enforcement of civil writs and warrants.

Untermeyer also believes that the Sheriff’s Department should take a pro-active role in curbing predatory lending practices that victimize the poorest citizens and fuels a multi-million dollar foreclosure industry.

"We can do better. The public demands public service that actually serves the public!" says Untermeyer. Already laying the groundwork for his campaign the candidate has begun meeting with a broad range of community organizations, professional associations and influential political insiders.

“My decision to launch this campaign has been encouraged by many of the people I have met with over the last six months,” says Untermeyer. “There is a general sense in the community that it’s time for a change. We can do better. We must do better. The citizens demand it and they deserve it!”

So can anyone just do this? Bring the Rocky statue with them places? Because if that's the case, I have a 9-year-old's birthday party next week at Nifty Fifty in Bensalem, and I think it would be a pretty big hit.
