Phillies pitcher Brett Myers was arrested and charged with assaulting his wife this morning in Boston.

According to the Associated Press, Myers and his wife got into an argument in downtown Boston, and Myers’ wife, Kim Wickman, and two witnesses told police Myers hit her. His wife posted Myers’ $200 bail.

His next hearing is Aug. 4. He doesn’t have to attend his next hearing in person.

Things just keep getting better and better for the Phillies, don’t they?

Let’s put aside the fact that Myers is apparently a psychotic, abusive asshole (that doesn’t effect his fantasy stats does it?) for a second. Why the hell is he hitting ANYONE in public?

Do professional athletes forget that they are more visible than most schmoes on the street, or do they honestly believe that laws don’t really apply to them?

That brings the professional athlete/wife beater total in Philadelphia up to 2 in the past six months, along with the sort-of-completely-overlooked Lee Nailon case.

To be fair, if you were on the team, you would want to punch someone.

ok, fine, I’ll say it: I guess he figures since everyone’s hitting him, he might want to get in on the action. Ba dum bum.

Bret Meyers is an a–hole, and any man who stood around and watched this happen without stepping in is as big a wus as myers.
If he could not restrain himself in a public place in front of strangers what do you think he does behind close doors.
I don’t know how you can hit any woman but your wife and the mother of your child, get your head examined bret, you have serious problems. You deserve to loose you wife child and career, I hope Dave Montgomery, Kim and all of baseball realises what a worthless shit you are!!! I hope you run into a guy as angry as you and he beats your punk ass.

It makes little sense to debate the Muslim practice of female torture while allowing American Christian men to escape for doing similar things. Is there really a difference?

Whether it was a symbolic beating or an actual beating, Myers wive was still beaten in public, and the police response will determine the extent of equal justice that is meted out to a baseball player or any other male who chooses his own brand of vigilantism for perceived wrongs.

Will they now be allowed to kill people on the street as well, all in public view, to teach violence instead of non-violence?

Teaching the public what is acceptable and what isn’t - especially from ball players and sports heroes - is a critical part of American culture building, and refusing to hold them accountable also tears it down.

In News reports that the player has taken “some time off to address his problem,” there is no attention to her problem - the victim.

When wives, or women, are allowed to be raped, beaten, or tortured, and there is more concern over the predator than the victim, society is badly disturbed, and rooted in the same mentality as that criticized of other nations who beat, torture and degrade women in public, or in private.

If America is serious about addressing domestic violence, this would be a good time to show it. If not, America needs to figure out why not.
