City Council is Aruba'd out

111105aruba.jpg Tuesday, the citizens of Philadelphia -- well, the 15 who voted -- passed the ethics reform ballot question by almost 90 percent. Ninety percent! You could run George Washington against Richard Nixon and Tricky Dick would still get 30 percent of the vote.

In response to this, yesterday City Council had a vigorous debate.

About whether or not they should pass an official resolution to encourage Philadelphians to boycott Aruba due to Natalee Holloway's disappearance.

And guess what? They couldn't even pass that either.

Jack Kelly: "We didn't want to do it, but I think the only way we're going to get some action from the Aruban government is by doing it economically."

And a retort from Frank Rizzo: "I don’t think this is a place for Philadelphia city council to be taking a position on another country that's a good country, (with) good people, good leadership."

The resolution was tabled.

Rizzo, of course, owns a condo in Aruba. Perhaps in a few weeks he'll have a mysterious basket of fresh Aruban fruit in his office. Or, you know, have his gym membership paid suddenly.
